Golden hat-trick complete! Metelka wins Paralympic gold after rival falls

The para-cyclist wins Slovakia’s first gold.

Slovakian para-cyclist Jozef Metelka won gold in the men’s 4000m pursuit C4 at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. This was Slovakia’s first gold medal in this event.

In a dramatic finale on Saturday, Metelka, 37, claimed victory after his 20-year-old British rival, Archie Atkinson, crashed during the final. Metelka initially trailed the Briton, who appeared to be on the fast track to gold. But Atkinson crashed, allowing Metelka to claim victory, crossing the finish line in a time of 4:27.920.

This gold medal completes Metelka’s hat-trick in this event, following his triumphs in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

Atkinson took silver despite his fall, while Frenchman Gatien Le Rousseau took bronze after beating compatriot Kevin Le Cunff.
