Great opportunity for Abel Ramos, born in Casa Grande

The biggest fight of Abel Ramos’ career is approaching, as the 33-year-old from Casa Grande prepares to face Mario “El Azteca” Barrios for the WBC welterweight title on Friday evening as part of the Mike Tyson vs. Mike Tyson main card. Jake Paul at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys, in Arlington, Texas.

Ramos (28-6-2, 22 knockouts) is an underdog despite his record and the quality of opponents he has faced. Barrios won the WBC welterweight interim title on September 30 last year from Yordenis Ugas, who scored a victory over Ramos.

Barrios defended the title in May and will now go for the full title on Friday evening. He is 29-2 and has lost to only two boxing greats, Keith Thurman and Gervonta Davis. He has won three straight fights since those defeats to become the WBA super lightweight champion.

Both fighters have been part of some major boxing cards, but nothing beats the unique spectacle of Tyson vs. Paul, which pits the 58-year-old former heavyweight champion and legend against a former teen actor turned YouTube superstar and professional boxer from Ohio.

Paul and his promotional company have found a way to connect with new audiences by booking fights against boxers, mixed martial arts fighters and athletes past their prime, and beating them for the most part.

But Ramos vs. Barrios is a legitimate fight between two Mexican-American veterans with tons of experience, and Ramos has never been knocked out.

“It is a dream I had as a child to become world champion,” Ramos said on Tuesday after his open training. “I take this fight seriously. I know Barrios is a great champion, but we are here to make that little child’s dream come true.”

Ramos said he never imagined he would be on the same card as Tyson, whose fights he saw as a youngster. He comes from a boxing family: his cousin Jesús Alejandro Ramos is a contender in the super welterweight division and he is trained by his older brother.

“(Winning) would change my life forever,” Abel said, before greeting his family and friends in Spanish from Casa Grande and thanking Mexican fight fans for attending his training.

“Happy to be back here in Texas,” Barrios said. “I know Abel comes in hungry; he’s ready, but I’m going to do everything I can to make sure this belt stays in San Antonio.

“You’ve got two Mexican fighters there fighting for the WBC. You know it’s going to be a blast. … This fight could easily be the fight of the night.”
