Green Bay Packers vs. Detroit Lions Predictions NFL Week 9

play

GREEN BAY – Our Green Bay Packers coverage team predicts the outcome of Sunday’s Week 9 game against the Detroit Lions.

Pete Dougherty

Regardless of whether Jordan Love plays, this will be a tough week for the Packers. The Lions are the highest scoring team in the NFL (33.4 points per game) and have one of the best offensive lines in the league, along with the hottest quarterback in Jared Goff (115.3 rating, second in the league). They also play quite well on defense, ranking 8th in points allowed (19.1) and second in defensive passer rating (77.2). The Packers will play with an injured Love (groin injury) or an impressive backup Malik Willis at quarterback. They will have to run the ball well anyway, which means Goff and Co. stay off the field. The Packers can win, of course, but the bet is that the high-flying Lions have the upper hand. Lions 31, Packers 24

The Packers only have a chance if quarterback Jordan Love plays and he can stay upright the entire game. The question is whether he’ll be close, but perhaps playing with a groin injury will lead to him making some of the safe throws he needs to get his completion percentage up and get moving. The Lions come in looking to hurt the Packers like they did last year, and they will if they can keep an eye on Love. If it’s Malik Willis, they’ll load the box and dare him to throw the ball. The Packers can’t win that way. The Lions haven’t done a good job of protecting their quarterback Jared Goff, so defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has to figure out how to get his front four going. If they can get after Goff without having to blitz a ton, they have a chance to win. As long as love plays. Pakkers 31, Leeuwen 28

Before the season, I had the Lions winning not just the NFC North, but the entire NFC. The only thing that might keep me from that midseason is Aidan Hutchinson’s season-ending leg injury, but even without their top pass rusher, the Lions represent the best this conference has to offer. They loaded up on offense, ranking sixth in the NFL in yards and first in scoring after losing by 52 points to the Tennessee Titans last week — in just three quarters. They are opportunistic in defense and rank eighth in scoring and second in takeaways. Put another way, they look a lot like the Packers. The difference is the Lions are a little more seasoned and don’t have the same quarterback uncertainty as Jordan Love tries to test whether he can play despite a groin injury on Sunday. If not for Love’s injury, I would be inclined to pick the Packers at home. Instead, I’m sticking with my preseason pick in a matchup where both teams will learn a lot about themselves in the second half of the season. Lions 27, Packers 22

The Lions are one of the best teams in the NFL. They scored more than 40 points in three of the past four games and handed the Vikings their first loss of the season. Even without Aidan Hutchinson, this team still gets it done. The Lions are a talented team playing against a Packers team that is dealing with injuries at quarterback and big pieces on defense, making this a tough ask for Green Bay. Lions 38, Packers 31
