Hannaford is canceling online orders due to ongoing network issues

Most Hannaford locations are again accepting credit cards, but the supermarket chain’s website and online ordering service were still offline Friday afternoon.

Customers began reporting problems Wednesday with certain locations’ ability to accept credit cards, online orders and prescriptions.

“Our recovery efforts for the network issue are still ongoing,” spokesperson Caitlin Cortelyou said in an emailed statement Friday. “We are working hard to resolve the remaining issues and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.”

Most pharmacies are processing prescriptions, she said, encouraging customers to go to the store in person to fill any prescriptions. Some pharmacies still can’t take calls, she said.

Scarborough resident John McMorrow said business appeared to be back to normal at that city’s retail store, including the pharmacy. But he said his wife was unable to call for a prescription earlier in the day.

“She tried to call from outside, and it was like a black hole that way,” McMorrow said as he walked through the parking lot Friday around 5 p.m. ‘But here and now there is no disturbance at all. I just used the self-service (with) a credit card.”

On Route 1, Saco Hannaford customers said they ran into trouble at other locations earlier this week.

William Monagle said he was unable to log into his rewards account at the store at noon Friday, where he would normally have access to coupons.

“I don’t know what caused it, but they seem to be back up and running now,” he said as he left the Saco location that evening.

Hannaford’s Dutch parent company, Ahold Delhaize, said in a statement that its US division had discovered a “cybersecurity issue within the US network” and had taken a number of systems offline to protect them. The company did not provide details on the nature of the security issue or indicate when the problem might be fixed.

The issue also affected other brands owned by Ahold Delhaize, the company said. The portfolio includes supermarket chains Stop & Shop, Food Lion and Giant, all of which appeared to have working websites on Friday evening.

Hannaford’s website featured a blank page with the company’s logo and the words “Sorry! We are having technical problems with our servers.” That message was still up at 8 p.m

Orders placed through Hannaford To Go that were supposed to be picked up and delivered Friday were canceled and the store that was notified had customers impacted, Cortelyou said.

“Customers with canceled orders may continue to see a pending transaction on their bank account, which should be processed within a few days,” she said.

It was unclear exactly how many stores remained affected on Friday afternoon. Courtelyou did not respond to follow-up questions about the scope of the remaining issues or an estimated timeline for their resolution.

“We thank our associates for their continued commitment to serving our customers with care and compassion,” said Cortelyou.
