Hansi Flick on the history between Barcelona and Bayern Munich: “The past doesn’t matter. The present is what is important.”

Speaking at his pre-match press conference (via @iMiaSanMia) prior to Bayern Munich’s Champions League match against Barcelona, former head coach Hansi Flick spoke to the team about its history.

Flick was head coach at Bayern until 2021. During his time at the club, he won six trophies in a year in 2020, when he was appointed as Niko Kovac’s interim replacement before making the role permanent. Flick would win the Bundesliga again a year later before becoming Germany’s head coach.

About the special game for him, Flick said:

“We prepare every match the same way. Of course I was at Bayern as a player and coach and I was successful there. I have many acquaintances there, players and management. It was a great time for me. I have nice memories. But now I am experiencing a new chapter here in Barcelona. I am very happy here. It is a special match, but it is our duty to give everything for the fans”

Barcelona are also on a big losing streak against Bayern, having not been beaten since their 3-0 win in the Champions League semi-finals in 2015. While their most notable defeat since then came to Flick’s Bayern, when they were defeated 8-2 in the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2020, the Bavarians won the title that year.

When it comes to Barça’s losing streak against Bayern, Flick said:

“The past doesn’t matter. The present is what is important. We cannot change what happened in the past. We are focused on doing our best tomorrow. Of course we will try to beat Bayern.”

Since Flick left the role at Bayern, Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel and Vincent Kompany have all held the position of head coach. The former midfielder commented on Bayern’s season under Kompany so far:

“Bayern is having a very good season. Vincent Kompany and his employees do an excellent job. They put the pressure on very high and are brave, with and without the ball. It’s going to be a tough match. But we will do our best and be ready for tomorrow”
