Vice President Kamala Harris appeared to undermine her own economic plan on Wednesday by saying her administration would crack down on companies that charge consumers inflated prices. But she acknowledged that “very few” companies engage in predatory pricing.

Harris delivered her speech at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 47th annual leadership conference in Washington, D.C., but offered few specific details about the policies she will pursue as she runs for president.

At one point, Harris spoke about providing families with the resources they need to “raise their children well.” However, she did not say what those resources would be or how they would be provided.

“I grew up with the idea that the children of the community are the children of the community, and that we all have a vested interest in ensuring that children can grow up with the resources they need to reach their God-given potential,” Harris said.

Harris said she wants to lower grocery costs for families struggling at the kitchen table, and she promised to take on big corporations that hype their customers. But she appeared to undermine her own policy moments later, saying that “very few” companies hype their customers.

“Many of you who come from states where we’ve seen extreme weather in California, wildfires in other parts of the country, or even in the pandemic where people are desperate because of these kinds of emergencies, desperate for support, and then some, you know, businesses, and there are very few of them, are doing this, but then they’re jacking up prices to make it harder for desperate people to get by,” Harris said. “We need to address that.”

Harris’ economic plan proposes raising the corporate tax rate from 21% to 28%, after previously supporting a 35% corporate tax rate during her short-lived 2020 presidential campaign.

While Harris’ campaign described this as a “fiscally responsible way to get money back into the pockets of working people and ensure billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share,” it has also drawn criticism from some policy groups.

According to the Tax Foundation’s analysis, Harris’ overall plan would raise taxes by $4.1 trillion from 2025 to 2034, while reducing long-term GDP by 2%, shrinking wages by 1.2% and eliminating 786,000 jobs over that period.
