Heather Dinich explains the impact of Georgia’s win over Tennessee on the College Football Playoff

Georgia Saturday was the first team from the College Football Playoff race. After beating Tennessee 31-17, they have put themselves firmly back in the field of 12.

However, the victory does raise some questions. Particularly where the selection committee should place the Bulldogs in relation to Alabama, Ole ma’am and Tennessee. ESPN’s Heather Dinich was able to explain what to expect from Tuesday’s upcoming reveal on SportsCenter on Sunday morning.

“Georgia’s win put them back in the college football playoffs. Period,” Dinich said. “But the question is, will the committee respect their strong schedule and record strength this week, despite head-to-head losses to Alabama and Ole Miss?

“If you look at Georgia’s resume now, a win against Texas, a win against Clemson and now a win against Tennessee, I don’t know if there’s another team in the country that can match that, but they have two losses. Last week, (the playoff committee) held Georgia behind Alabama and Ole Miss. So if they are consistent, I would expect them to do the same but have Georgia over Tennessee.

Heading into week 13, no. 3 Texas is the highest-ranked team in the SEC, with its only blemish coming in a 30-15 loss to Georgia in Austin earlier this season. When the rankings are released Tuesday, they will likely remain in the first round, with Georgia, Alabama, Ole Miss and Tennessee trailing behind.

Dinich explained that in her scenario, Tennessee only advanced to the first team because of the stipulation that the five highest-ranked conference champions are guaranteed to make the playoffs. After BYUwas upset late into the night on Saturday, the Mountain West would interpret the Big 12’s automatic bid as Boise State continued his winning ways during week 12.

For Georgia, however, it will be interesting to see if the committee preaches consistency in this scenario. With head-to-head losses to both the Crimson Tide and Rebels, many would say the Bulldogs should be behind these two teams. However, neither beat a top 10 team this weekend, nor does it have the winning resume that Georgia has.

If one thing is certain, you can’t discount the Bulldogs. Georgia has put itself back in the race and its two-score win over Tennessee is the most impressive of the weekend for any College Football Playoff contender. We will have to wait and see whether the committee honors that on Tuesday.
