Helicopter replacing power poles on Mount Charleston

Crews will begin replacing some aging utility poles this week on Mount Charleston, just outside Las Vegas.

NV Energy says work is underway in the Angel Peak area on Monday to install new poles with “innovative fire mesh technology” and covered conductors.

Due to the steep terrain, a helicopter will assist with the work. This means that residents and visitors can expect the helicopter and heavy equipment in the area until the end of the year.

According to NV Energy, there will be no road or trail closures and no power outages are expected.

The helicopter will be located at the Middle Kyle Canyon Fire Station, near SR-157.

Officials say the new poles will help minimize the risk of infrastructure-related wildfires and protect the community from extreme weather events.

NV Energy is working with the US Forest Service and VM West on the replacements.
