Here are seven Day of the Dead, Día de los Muertos celebrations in Houston – Houston Public Media

Here are seven upcoming events in the Houston area to celebrate Día de los Muertos this year.

Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead in English, is a multi-day cultural holiday celebrated in Mexico and other North and South American countries that celebrates deceased friends and family members. The holiday usually takes place on November 1 and 2, when people visit the graves of their loved ones and offer them food, drinks and gifts.

MECA Día de los Muertos Festival:

November 2-3, 11am – 8pm, 1900 Kane St. Houston, TX 77007

For the 24th year in a row, Houston Multicultural Education and Counseling Through the Arts (MECA) is hosting its Dia de los Muertos Festival. The two-day event is free to the public and celebrates the traditions of Latin American folk art while also honoring family and ancestors. The events include art activities for children, an ofrendas/art exhibition, artist and artisan vendors, delectable festival food and three engaging performances.

Discovery Green Día de los Muertos Celebration:

November 1, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM, 1500 McKinney St. Houston, TX 77010

This free event features art activities for the whole family, artist demonstrations and vendors. Houston native Nick Gaitan will also perform boleros, Tex Mex and Chicano Soul music. There will also be a community ofrenda/alter built by local artist Angel Quesada.

Día de los Muertos Festival Family Movie Night

November 1, 6:00 PM, Trebly Park, 1515 Fannin St. Houston, TX 77002

During this event there will be a free screening of the Disney film “Coco” along with face painting and character meetings. A community ofrenda will also be unveiled and guests are invited to bring photos of loved ones and pets.

Día de los Muertos concert

November 1, 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM, 17037 Farm to Market Road 529 Houston, TX, 77095

The Province 8 Art Studio is organizing a Dia de los Muertos concert. The event costs $15 each and features live music, performances and food.

Día de los Muertos Rumba on the Karma River Okas

November 1, 9:30 PM, Karma River Oaks 4102 Richmond Avenue Suite F Houston, TX 77027

The free event for 21+ people has the theme Día de los Muertos and includes music by Orquesta Salmerum and DJ Geraldo. The music will focus on “dance, style, energy and good vibes.”

Houston Día de los Muertos Parade:

November 2, 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM, Sam Houston Park, 1000 Bagby St. Houston, TX 77002

This will be Houston’s 4th annual Día de los Muertos Parade. The event features live music, a festive parade, concessions, arts and crafts vendors and more. The event will also be streamed live on ABC13.

City Tempo Festival

November 2, 4-8 p.m., City Place Plaza, 1250 Lake Plaza Dr. Spring, TX 77389

This free event features live music from Selena tribute band Bidi Bidi Banda. A mariachi ensemble will also perform along with native dance artists. City Place partners with Advocates of a Latino Museum of Cultural and Visual Arts & Archive Complex in Houston. Visitors can also make offerings to a communal altar.
