Monday is Veterans Day, when Americans honor those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces both past and present — a departure from Memorial Day and its focus on honoring those who died in the line of duty, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs .

The federal holiday invites Americans to show gratitude to those who served in war and peacetime and celebrate with parades and other festivities. Many companies across the country are also offering special deals and discounts as a thank you.

Here are some Veterans Day foodie deals people can find in California on Monday, plus what’s closed for the holiday.

Which restaurants have discounts on Veterans Day near me?

  • from Applebee’s: Veterans and active-duty military personnel, reservists and the National Guard will receive a free meal at Applebee’s on Monday from an exclusive Veterans Day menu.
  • BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery: All current and former military personnel with a valid military ID will receive a free Chocolate Chunk Pizookie with no minimum food purchase.
  • Broken Yolk Café: All veterans and active duty military personnel will receive a small stack of pancakes for free on Monday. You must present an active or inactive military ID at the store.
  • Buffalo wild wings: Current and former members of the armed forces with valid ID will receive 10 free boneless wings and fries at Buffalo Wild Wings on Monday. The offering is good if you dine in or for walk-in/counter orders if you order at a Buffalo Wild Wings Go location.
  • Pizza Cuisine in California: Veterans and active duty service members receive a free appetizer and drink from a set menu when they dine on Monday.
  • Chilis: All veterans and active military personnel get free admission at Chili’s on Monday.

  • IHOP: IHOP is offering a free combination of red, white and blueberry pancakes for veterans and active military personnel at participating locations. On Mondays you can only dine from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM.
  • Lazy dog ​​restaurants: All veterans and active duty military personnel will receive free admission on Monday.
  • On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina: Veterans and active military personnel with a valid ID or proof of service can receive a free Choose 2 Combo meal, valid only when dining at participating restaurants.

  • Yogurtland: Veterans and active duty military personnel will receive a 15% discount at participating locations nationwide on Monday.

Why is Veterans Day celebrated on November 11?

The federal holiday is celebrated on November 11 because an armistice was signed between the Allied powers and Germany on November 11, 1918, during World War I. This date is considered the end of the war, despite its official end with the signing of the treaty. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Treaty of Versailles was concluded months later.

Are banks and post offices closed on Veterans Day?

Many banks typically close on federal holidays. City National Bank, Bank of America, Chase, California Bank & Trust and Mechanics Bank are among a few financial institutions that celebrate Veterans Day according to their holiday calendars.

According to the US Postal Service, all post offices will be closed on Veterans Day and there will be no regular mail service. Delivery and pickup schedules will resume on November 12.

UPS said pickup and delivery services will be available on Veterans Day and UPS stores will be open.
