4:30 PM update:

NV Energy customers could experience a proactive power outage of 24 hours or longer Wednesday through Thursday due to expected high winds in the Reno-Carson area.

The utility has moved to a public safety outage management alert and indicated that power outages could begin around 6 a.m. Wednesday “and last well into Thursday, November 21,” according to the latest statement.

Neighborhoods that could be affected include:

  • South Reno around Lakeside Drive, W. Huffaker Lane and Holcomb Ranch Road
  • Verdi between Somersett Ridge Parkway and the Nevada-California state line
  • The Virginia City Highlands neighborhood in south Reno, as well as areas north and east of Virginia City
  • Genoa North, which includes Genoa Lakes Golf Course and parts of the Stewart community
  • Galena, along with parts of Montreux and the Mt. Rose – Ski Tahoe Area
  • Washoe Valley and parts of western Carson City

“All affected customers have been notified via phone, text and email messages,” NV Energy said.

Original story:

According to NV Energy, the high winds expected Wednesday could lead to proactive power outages in parts of Northern Nevada.

The utility said it was watching for weather conditions that could lead to proactive outages, or a Public Safety Outage Management event, to prevent wildfires on Wednesday morning. NV Energy said a possible outage could occur between 6 a.m. and noon on Wednesday.

Wind in weather forecast for northwestern Nevada

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for the greater Reno-Carson City-Minden area, Mineral County and southern Lyon County on Wednesday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. The weather service expects southerly winds of 30 to 55 km/h in the area, with gusts up to 90 km/h.

“Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items, such as patio furniture, Christmas decorations and trash cans, before winds increase and could blow these items away,” the NWS Reno office said. “The best thing you can do is prepare in advance by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries, and/or candles in case the power goes out.”
