High winds, thunderstorms in Denver, Eastern Plains

Damaging winds and a line of severe thunderstorms will move across Colorado on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

North-central Colorado and the metropolitan area will experience winds of up to 60 mph (96 km/h) during the storms on Tuesday, with gusts of 80 mph (130 km/h) possible, with more severe thunderstorms over the Plains, the NWS forecasters said in a hazardous weather outlook.

“Get off the water in the early afternoon as thunderstorms with dangerous wind gusts will develop,” weather forecasters said as a warning to water sports enthusiasts who want to take advantage of Tuesday’s warm weather.

The Denver area will see temperatures near 87 degrees before showers and thunderstorms move in just before 4 p.m., meteorologists said. The strongest storms are expected in the metro between 5 and 7 p.m.

According to NWS meteorologists, the severe weather will move east by mid-evening, hitting the Eastern Plains between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m.

While the chance of a tornado is low, the Eastern Plains could see small hail Tuesday afternoon, NWS weather officials said.
