Highlights: Harris and Walz have CNN interview, Trump visits the Midwest

Bash asked Walz about a number of inaccuracies in his file, starting with the way he described his 24 years of service in the National Guard.

In a 2018 video clip once distributed by the Harris-Walz campaign, Walz spoke out against gun violence, saying, “We can make sure that those weapons of war, that I carried in the war, are the only place those weapons are.”

Critics say Walz portrayed himself as someone who spent time in a war zone. But a campaign spokesman said he misspoke.

Walz responded that he was “incredibly proud” of his service in the National Guard.

My record speaks for itself, but I think people get to know me. I speak like they do. I speak candidly, I wear my emotions on my sleeve, and I speak passionately about our children being shot in schools … I think people know me. They know who I am. They know where my heart is.”

Walz said his wife, an English teacher, told him his grammar wasn’t always correct.

“One thing I will never do is, I will never disparage another member’s service in any way. I never have. And I never will,” Walz said.

Asked about statements that seemed to indicate he and his wife conceived their children through in vitro fertilization when in fact they used a less controversial fertility treatment, he said he thinks most Americans understand that it is the Trump campaign that is nitpicking.

But Walz did not address Bash’s question about false statements his aides made during his first congressional campaign in 2006 about his 1995 drunken driving arrest. The aides denied he was driving while drunk, but a transcript of his court appearances shows he and his attorney acknowledged it.
