LOS ANGELES – It’ll be the city of angels versus the city that never sleeps in the 2024 World Series.

The New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers meet in the Fall Classic, pitting the two most populous cities in the United States and some of baseball’s most historic clubs against each other for the Commissioner’s Trophy.

The franchises are not new to success; the Yankees have 27 World Series titles in the MLB, while Los Angeles has seven championships, the sixth-most in baseball.

This will be the first time the two teams have met in the World Series in more than 40 years, but the two franchises know each other well when it comes to playing for the title. The Yankees and Dodgers have played in the World Series 11 times, the most in league history.

Last Yankees-Dodgers World Series

The last World Series meeting between New York and Los Angeles took place in 1981, when the Dodgers won their fifth title in franchise history.

New York won the first two games of the series at home to take a 2–0 lead, but Los Angeles came back to win four games in a row – the first three at home and the last in New York – to clinch the World Series to win.

One of the biggest moments of the series came in Game 5; With the series tied at 2-2 with the Yankees leading 1-0 entering the seventh inning, Pedro Guerrero and Steve Yeager hit back-to-back home runs to give the Dodgers the lead in an eventual victory. In Game 6, the Los Angeles offense broke out and won 9-2 to capture the title.

The 1981 World Series marked the first time co-MVPs were awarded, with Guerrero, Yeager and Ron Cey sharing the honors.
