Hoboken Council President Jen Giattino dies suddenly at age 52

Hoboken Council President Jen Giattino, who was elected last year to her fourth term on the council representing the 6th Ward, died suddenly tonight at the age of 52, leaving the entire community in utter disbelief.

“I am heartbroken to share that my beloved wife, Jen – the love of my life and mother of our three children – has passed away suddenly. She was not only a wonderful mother, but also a dedicated public servant who cared deeply about this community,” her husband Joe Giattino said in a statement.

“Jen’s tireless efforts, kindness and passion have touched so many lives here in Hoboken. We are devastated by her loss and I ask for privacy for our family as we try to navigate this difficult time. Thank you for your understanding and for keeping Jen in your thoughts and prayers.”

First elected in 2011 at the request of then-Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Giattino convincingly won re-election in 2015, 2019 and 2023, most recently capturing two-thirds of the vote despite running against two opponents, one of whom was endorsed by Mayor Ravi Bhalla.

She had a great track record of responding to voters and was known to really love knocking on doors during the campaign season, a combination that made her a tough opponent to overcome.

The only blemish on her election results was a failed bid to become mayor in 2017.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn the sudden and incredibly tragic passing of Council President Jen Giattino. Jen’s dedication to our community will never be forgotten. Her kindness, humility and quiet determination made her a beloved figure whose impact will be felt for generations to come,” Bhalla added.

“There are no words to describe the sense of loss we all feel. Jen was a leader in our community and a fighter for all of us. Hoboken has lost a bright light and she will be deeply missed. I hope our community can come together in her memory, embrace the Giattino family with prayer and support, and respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Hudson County Executive Craig Guy also offered his condolences and praised Giattino’s contributions to the Mile Square City.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Jen Giattino. Jen was a true public servant. She dedicated her life to helping the residents of Hoboken and was a leader in her community. She was also a devoted wife and mother. All of Hudson County is sending
sincere condolences to Jen’s family.”
