Hoda Kotb Leaves NBC’s ‘Today’

Topline

NBC longtime anchor Hoda Kotb told Today’s editors Thursday that she is leaving the morning show, five years after taking a co-host position with Savannah Guthrie and working for the network for nearly 30 years. She said she wants to retire and spend more time with her family.

Key Facts

In a letter to staff reportedly sent Thursday, Kotb wrote that she had been considering leaving for “quite some time” and was spurred on by her televised 60th birthday celebration last month: “A new decade of my life lies ahead of me, and now my daughters and my mother need and deserve a greater share of my time,” she said.

Kotb said she will remain on the staff through early 2025, and NBC has not announced any further personnel changes.

Although Kotb has left her job as an anchor, she will not be leaving NBC altogether, the network said. However, the network did not make clear what role she will hold going forward.

Kotb officially joined NBC News in 1998 as a Dateline NBC correspondent, and in 2007 he became the fourth-hour anchor of Today. He was named co-host of the show following the departure of Matt Lauer in 2017 amid allegations of sexual misconduct.

Main background

Kotb became a household name when she co-hosted the fourth hour of “Today” with Kathie Lee Gifford. Their show, called “Kathie Lee & Hoda,” was known for its chemistry, banter and entertainment-focused hour to close out the morning. Gifford announced her departure from “Today” in 2018, and Jenna Bush Hager, daughter of President George W. Bush, took over. The hour has since been called “Today with Hoda & Jenna.” During her time at NBC, Kotb has been nominated for 10 Daytime Emmy Awards, winning one in 2022 for Outstanding Morning Program. She has also earned 11 News & Documentary Emmy nominations, winning one in 2010 for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a News Magazine for the “Dateline NBCs” episode about the landing of a US Airways plane in the Hudson River.

Tangent

Kotb, a Forbes 50 Over 50 honoree, has been candid about her personal life during her time at the network. She shared her battle with breast cancer on “Today” in 2017, allowing the show to chronicle her mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. In 2017 and 2019, she announced that she had adopted baby girls with then-partner Joel Schiffman, whom she divorced in 2022.
