How Jayson Tatum chose to handle Grant Williams’ reckless foul

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum had plenty of time to think about how he wanted to handle his conflict with Grant Williams in front of the media.

Tatum chose not to speak to reporters after Friday night’s game, when Williams delivered a blindside hit on the five-time All-Star, sending them both to the ground.

But when Tatum took the stage with the opportunity to speak out for the first time about the Williams incident following Saturday’s 113-103 win at the Spectrum Center, he decided to sidestep the subject entirely.

“I don’t really want to talk about it,” Tatum told reporters. according to Kayla Burton of NBC Sports Boston. “I was just ready for today’s match. We came to Charlotte and did what we had to do. I’m going to Atlanta to try to get one more win before we go home.

If Tatum was looking for some form of revenge on Saturday, he hardly showed it. The only time there was a blip on the radar that Tatum was trying to get back at Williams was when he swung at the rim after a dunk and crashed into the Hornets forward. However, it was difficult to tell whether Tatum did that intentionally.

Tatum ultimately went about his usual business, finishing with a team-high 29 points, buoyed by a 14-for-17 performance from the free throw line. He made just 1 of 9 three-pointers and committed five turnovers, while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out three assists.

“I never make it about one person. I understand who I am, who I am in this league and come out and play the right way,” Tatum said. “It’s not about a matchup or anything. Just come out and try to dominate. Give my team the best chance to win and play the right way, whether that’s scoring, rebounding, screening other guys. The goal is to make sure we give ourselves the best chance to win. So it is not about a situation in which no other person is present.”

Gary Washburn of the Boston Globe reported that Tatum and Williams spoke at some point after the incident and “Tatum was apparently still annoyed but accepted” Williams’ apology.

Tatum may forgive it, but he certainly won’t forget what happened. When the final buzzer sounded on Saturday, rather than mingle with the opposition on the court, Tatum fled to the locker room, avoiding any possible encounter with Williams.
