The then No. 4 Buckeyes overcame an early 10-point deficit to defeat the then No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions, 20–13, on November 2.

Ohio State (7-1, 4-1 Big Ten) earned the No. 2 ranking in the first College Football Playoff rankings, which were unveiled on Nov. 5. Their only loss is a one-point loss to now top-ranked Oregon.

Ohio State has a plus-25.8 point differential this season, including a plus-33.8 margin at home. The Buckeyes are averaging 30 all-time points against the Boilermakers.

Ohio State’s prolific offense is led by senior quarterback Will Howard. He has thrown for 1,977 yards and 19 touchdowns (tied for first in the Big Ten) while throwing five interceptions. Howard is completing 73.2% of his passes and has a QBR of 84.2, eighth in the country.

Freshman sensation Jeremiah Smith has hauled in 39 receptions for 678 yards and eight receiving touchdowns (tied for second in Big Ten) while averaging 17.4 yards per reception. Smith failed to record a touchdown for the first time this season in the win over Penn State. He had played seven straight games with at least one touchdown.

Senior receiver Emeka Egbuka often drifts away from the spotlight. He has 46 receptions for 577 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 12.5 yards per reception.

The rushing attack is averaging 185.6 yards per game and continues their 1-2 jabs as junior running back Quinshon Judkins has 95 carries for 615 yards and six touchdowns. Senior running back TreVeyon Henderson has collected 72 carries for 503 yards and four touchdowns.

The offensive line silenced the doubters as Ohio State racked up 176 rushing yards against Penn State to power its offense.

The Buckeyes’ defense made the difference in last week’s breakout of Happy Valley. They held Penn State to under 300 yards of offense.

Ohio State allows the third-fewest points per game (12.0) and 256.4 yards of total offense per game. They allow the seventh-fewest rushing yards in the country.

Junior safety Sonny Styles has recorded 21 solo tackles, while senior defensive end JT Tuimoloau has registered 4.5 sacks and 17 solo tackles. Senior cornerback Denzel Burke has two interceptions and 19 solo tackles.

Ohio State leads the all-time series, 42-15-2. Since 1989, they are 8-0 against the Boilermakers at Ohio Stadium. They are 9-5 in West Lafayette. The Buckeyes won the previous meeting 41-7.

The Boilermakers (1-7, 0-5) are enduring one of their toughest seasons in recent memory. After beating Indiana State in their season opener, Purdue has lost their last seven games.

They are the only Big Ten team yet to win a conference game.

Purdue claims the 119th-ranked scoring offense in the country (20.2 points) and has a minus-26 point differential, which is the second-worst in the country.

Senior quarterback Hudson Card has played in six games, throwing for 1,005 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions. Card has thrown for over 200 yards in just two games and is completing 61.7% of his passes. He is expected to make his second straight start since returning from a concussion.

His top target, sophomore tight end Max Klare, has hauled in 30 receptions for 462 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 15.4 yards per reception.

Junior receiver Jahmal Edrine has 15 receptions for 215 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 14.3 yards per reception.

The Boilermakers ground game averages 149 yards per play.

Junior running back Devin Mockobee has tallied 91 carries for 539 yards and three touchdowns. The scores are minimal, but the distance is noticeable. This season he has two competitions in the 100 meters. Northwestern held him to just 29 yards.

Senior running back Reggie Love III is also an option, totaling 60 carries for 325 yards and two touchdowns.

If the Boilermakers want to work some magic, they’ll need plenty of play from Georgia sophomore receiver C.J. Smith, who played in his first game of the season, a 26-20 OT loss to Northwestern. It was their second overtime loss of the season. Smith collected four receptions for 55 yards.

Purdue’s defense has been bleeding all season. They rank last in the Big Ten in total defense and 16th in passing defense. The run game isn’t much better, with over 200 rushing yards per game. They allow an average of 36.9 points and 448.1 yards per game.

Senior linebacker Kydran Jenkins anchors the unit with 35 solo tackles and 5.5 sacks. Sophomore defensive back Will Heldt has also contributed 26 solo tackles and five sacks. Sophomore defenseman Dillon Thieneman has 42 solo tackles.

It is well documented that the “Spoilermakers” tend to show up when you least expect it. Back in 2018, Then-No. 3 Ohio State traveled to unranked Purdue and had their doors blown off, 49-20. That was the last unranked team to beat Ohio State.

As shocking as the stats seem, the Buckeyes can’t overlook this foe, just as they slept most of the game at Nebraska (looking ahead to Penn State), eventually emerging to earn a narrow victory.

Purdue has never beaten Ohio State in the Horseshoe.
