    The New England Patriots and New York Jets renew their rivalry on “Thursday Night Football,” but with a different look.

    When the two AFC East rivals face off at MetLife Stadium on Thursday night, Bill Belichick will be absent from the game against New England for the first time since 1999.

    During Belichick’s tenure, the Patriots have dominated the Jets, with Belichick’s teams going 37-11 in the regular season against the Jets and their roster of seven head coaches since 2000.

    The Jets, however, have a chance to write a new chapter against a Patriots team that is finding its way under new head coach Jerod Mayo. Both teams still have something to prove.

    After a Week 1 upset against the Bengals, the Patriots came crashing back to earth, losing a competitive game to the Seahawks in overtime. Now, Pats fans are anxiously (and perhaps impatiently) awaiting the approval of No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye, who has been benched this season behind Jacoby Brissett.

    The Jets are also starting to find their groove after a mixed first two weeks of the season: New York suffered a brutal loss to the 49ers in Week 1 and struggled to get going against the Titans in Week 2. They got a win, but it wasn’t aesthetically pleasing football.

    The Jets vs. Patriots game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. ET, the same start time as all of Amazon’s “Thursday Night Football” games for the 2024 NFL season.

    NFL fans who want to watch the “Thursday Night Football” game live will need to have an Amazon Prime subscription to stream the game.

    Al Michaels (play-by-play), Kirk Herbstreit (color commentary) and Kaylee Hartung (sideline reporter) will be on hand for the Amazon broadcast.

    Only two players in the 2024 NFL draft pool are over the age of 40: Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Bears tight end Marcedes Lewis. Coincidentally, both players were teammates with the Green Bay Packers earlier in their careers.

    While he has not yet been promoted to starting quarterback, it appears New England has a plan to gradually transition Maye into the starting quarterback role.

    According to head coach Jerod Mayo, the organization gives Maye an abnormally high number of practice sessions with the first team during practices. Mayo acknowledged that there is a delicate balance to be struck between preparing Brissett for game week and preparing Maye for his career.

    Jets fans hoping to see their biggest offseason acquisition will have to wait. The pass rusher acquired from the Eagles has not yet ended his holdout and is yet to play in 2024.

    “Everybody goes through their own process and I remain confident that when he gets here, we’re going to welcome him with open arms, we’re going to take great care of him and he’s going to be a part of this football team,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said earlier this season.

    Belichick’s biggest selling point should come on offense. While Belichick had a rough few years toward the end of his tenure in New England, his experience managing Tom Brady would make him a viable choice to manage Aaron Rodgers. If he brings in a young, up-and-coming offensive coordinator, the Jets might be more excited about their offense than they were with Saleh at the helm.

    If Belichick was only planning on targeting retread coordinator hires, the Jets might get bored with him. But at the very least, the Jets will likely give him an interview if they let Saleh go after 2024. After all, Belichick was the one who walked away from the Patriots in 2000.

    There are also other landing spots suitable for the “Hoodie”.

    If Aaron Rodgers is still Aaron Rodgers in 2024, he can further cement his reputation as one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.

    Currently, Rodgers is just 1,963 yards behind Hall of Fame Dolphins QB Dan Marino for eighth place on the all-time career passing list. That could be easy work for Rodgers if he can gel with his skill position group, which features wide receiver Garrett Wilson as the standout.

    There’s a good chance Rodgers will pass Matt Ryan for seventh place by the end of the season: Rodgers is just 3,394 yards behind Ryan.

    Of course, yards aren’t as important as TDs: Rodgers has some work to do to catch up to former teammate Brett Favre. He’s 30 tuddies behind Favre for fourth all-time, a mark you can reach but that requires a vintage Rodgers. – Joe Rivera

    Earlier in 2024, Aaron Rodgers made headlines again by nearly taking center stage in the presidential election.

    There were rumors that Rodgers would be Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election, but that did not happen.

    RFK Jr. confirmed that he spoke with Rodgers, but ultimately chose California attorney Nicole Shanahan — no relation to the football Shanahans — as his vice presidential nominee.

    Nick Bosa’s five-year, $170 million contract, signed in 2023 with the San Francisco 49ers, makes him not only the NFL’s highest-paid edge rusher, but also the NFL’s highest-paid defensive player. That’s a group Jets edge rusher Haason Reddick is looking to break into, but the possibility seems remote at the moment given his reticence.

    The Jets will be without a key defensive cog on Thursday night, as linebacker C.J. Mosley will be out with a foot injury. Mosley is a five-time second-team All-Pro and signed with the Jets in 2019.

    Since the Jets hired Saleh for the 2021 season, he has led the Jets to a 19-34 record — a .358 winning percentage.

    Under Saleh, New York has never qualified for the playoffs.

    It’s going to be a beautiful night for football at MetLife Stadium. The temperature will be around 77 degrees when the Patriots and Jets kick off Thursday night, and it won’t drop below 70 degrees while the two teams play, according to the Weather Channel forecast.

    There is only a 1 percent chance of precipitation during the game. There will be a light breeze, but it will be limited to about 5 mph. So the weather should not have much of an impact on the game.

    Denver Broncos running back Audric Estime was the only other NFL player who was nearly 20 years old when the season started. He saw his first action with the Denver Broncos on September 8, just two days after his 21st birthday.

    The Patriots will have three starters against the Jets: left tackle Vedarian Lowe, left guard Sidy Sow and middle linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley. They also decided to sit out Marco Wilson, who was the team’s No. 4 cornerback through the first two games of the season, in favor of Alex Austin and Marcellus Dial.
