The Washington State Cougars are back at Martin Stadium this week as they take on the Utah State Aggies.

The Cougs, currently ranked as the 20th best team in the country, are fighting for a spot in the expanded College Football Playoff. Their chances are slim, but with just one loss this season, WSU’s playoff hopes are certainly still alive.

How is WSU playing this season?

The Cougars have a 7-1 record for the first time since 2018. Three weeks ago, they became bowl eligible after beating Hawaii 42-10.

Quarterback John Mateer is fourth in the nation in total offense, averaging 341 yards per game. He recorded two touchdowns and nearly 300 total yards in WSU’s final game against San Diego State.

WSU linebacker Kyle Thornton was also recently named a Burlsworth Trophy Nominee, an award given to the most outstanding walk-on player in college football. Thornton leads the Cougars with 46 tackles and is tied for the team lead with 5.5 tackles-for-loss.

Both the Cougs and Aggies are saying bye. Washington State is committed to the College Football Playoff, where they are currently ranked 21st. To crack the top 12, they will likely need to pick up big wins over the rest of their schedule.

Washington State’s next game is Saturday, November 16 against the New Mexico Lobos.
