Hugh Grant recently shared his thoughts on the beloved Notting Hill character.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Grant said his character William Thacker, the love interest of Julia Roberts’ Anna Scott, lacked courage.

“When I’m watching the channels at home after a few drinks and this comes up, I think, ‘Why doesn’t my character have any balls?’ There’s a scene in this movie where she’s in my house and the dads come to the front door and ring the bell and I think I’m just going to let her pass me by and open the door. That’s horrible.

The actor added: “I’ve never had a girlfriend, or even now a woman, who hasn’t said, ‘Why the hell didn’t you stop her? What’s wrong with you?’ And I don’t really have an answer to that – that’s how it’s written. And I actually think he’s despicable.”

It’s worth noting that Grant has often criticized his past films, including The Rewrite.

However, speaking with the Hollywood reporter he clarified, “I’ve read that I hate all my movies. That’s not true, the movies are often great. I hate mine. I always think, ‘Oh, you screwed that up.’ You never feel good about your own things, just like in the old days when you answered messages on the answering machine, you always felt sick when you heard your own voice And seeing yourself on film is that time.
