I watched Terrifier 2 for the first time and I have to talk about the part in the horror movie that makes no sense

2024 feels like the year Art The Clown really hit the mainstream. Scarer 3 is getting good reviews ahead of its theatrical release, and you can’t walk into a Spirit Halloween without encountering a life-size animatronic of the slasher clown. None of this would be possible without the critically acclaimed previous films, and as someone who needed to catch up, I decided to check out Scarer 2. Afterwards, I was shocked to see that the film was as well received as it was, thanks to a part that made no sense.

Fair warning for those who haven’t watched it yet: I will be going into spoilers about it Scarer 2. I encourage those who haven’t seen it yet to watch it now if they have a Prime Video subscription, especially because I want to know if I’m the only one with a major problem with the Little Pale Girl seen in the horror movie .

The little pale girl ruined the movie for me

It isn’t long before the Little Pale Girl arrives Scarer 2as viewers get to know her not long after Art The Clown is brought back to life. Amelie McLain’s performance itself is completely fine, so I want to start by saying that none of what I’m about to discuss relates to her in the slightest. I’m more angry about the character himself and how consistently such a critically acclaimed horror film repeatedly ignores the rules it sets for this character.

Of course, I also understand why people like Eric Eisenberg of CinemaBlend and many others gave Scarer 2 favorable reviews. Ultimately, it’s one of the goriest slasher films on the market, and it does it very well. Well, I think a lot of people are overlooking the Little Pale Girl, although I just couldn’t and shouldn’t express why she ruined the movie for me.

The film introduces the little pale girl and then tells us nothing about her

Little Pale Girl’s first appearance in Scarer 2 feels important, and it’s an incredibly well-executed scene. Art is washing his clown suit in a laundromat when she shows up, and the two end up laughing and playing pat-a-cake while he waits for his clothes to be cleaned. A man who was sleeping near the entrance wakes up, and we see the scene from his perspective, and we see a naked Kunst playing pat-a-cake with the air.

I thought this scene was brilliant because it established that the Little Pale Girl existed in Art’s mind, and for some reason looked like him. I wondered if she was an extended family member, like a child or even a victim of the killer. There was a deeper story to be told about this little girl and her relationship with Art, and I was immediately drawn in to hearing more about her story and what she stood for.

Unfortunately, Scarer 2 isn’t all that interested in revealing anything about her, or including her in the story. There is a scene that seems to indicate that she could be the daughter of a circus performer who was mysteriously murdered, but this is only briefly touched upon and never mentioned again.

In fact, I would argue that we know less about the character at the end of the film than we assumed at the beginning of the adventure. She remains a great mystery to the point that she is missing from the end of the film until she recovers Art’s head, and there are no clear answers as to who she is or if we will ever see her again. It’s not the kind of resolution I’d expect from a horror film that barely missed our list of entries with a critical score of 90% or more on Rotten Tomatoes, and it only became more frustrating the more I thought about it.

She is initially shown as imaginary, but later becomes real?

In addition to no explanation being given as to who the Little Pale Girl is, Scarer 2 often breaks the rules it establishes about the character. As I said, the opening scene she is in implies that she is Art’s figment of her imagination, as she could only be seen by the killer clown.

Later in the movie we get some pretty obvious scenes that prove that both siblings, Sienna and Jonathan, can see her too. At first I thought it might be possible that the siblings were also among a select few who could see this girl, and that it would play a role in the story. Unfortunately, Scarer 2 goes back to murders and doesn’t really expand on it.

It drove me crazy when we got to the very end of the movie and it seems like Little Pale Girl has absolutely nothing to do with the return of Art The Clown. Was she real, imaginary or just a manifestation of evil? It doesn’t seem like anyone on the internet knows, and based on what I’ve read online, she’s completely absent from the wonderfully gory Scarer 3. How come I’m the only one frustrated by this?

Is Pale Girl an homage to nonsensical twists in classic Slasher sequels?

As frustrated as I am, I think back to some of the best horror films and the subpar sequels that followed. For every Hellraiser or Friday the 13ththere is a sequel later that introduces a nonsensical twist that didn’t live up to the original premise.

On some level, I have to think that the Little Pale Girl is an intentional nod to those twists in classic horror films, especially with the revelation that she is absent from Scarer 3. Perhaps that’s why the horror community is so forgiving of the sequels of franchises they hold dear. They are willing to look past the shortcomings Scarer 2 and support it despite the lack of answers surrounding the character.
