World number 1 Iga Swiatek will face American Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Wednesday evening. The top-seeded men’s tennis player will then face Daniil Medvedev.

The 23-year-old Swiatek is targeting her second Grand Slam title in 2024 after winning Roland Garros in June, while sixth-seeded Pegula is hoping to qualify for her first ever Grand Slam semi-final.

Both players are in good form for their last eight matches. Swiatek won the French Open in June and Pegula won the Canadian Open and reached the final in Cincinnati last month. The winner will face either 22nd-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia or unseeded Czech Karolína Muchová.

Later in the evening, Jannik Sinner, number one in the men’s rankings, will also try to take a step towards his second Grand Slam of the year. The Italian arrives in top form, having won the Australian Open and the Cincinnati Open.

Sinner will face 2021 champion Medvedev in the quarterfinals. Despite the doping controversy and a 5-7 losing record against the Russian, the Italian is the favorite to advance and win his second major title of his career.

She has been a consistent performer while her challenger, the world number one, failed to perform tonight.

If Pegula, the sixth seed, wins tonight’s match, she will advance to the semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time in her life, after six previous attempts, according to the US Open.

Pegula breaks Swiatek’s serve

After just over an hour of play, the American leads 6-2, 4-3.

Swiatek made a number of unforced errors when it looked like Pegula wanted to break the Polish player’s serve in order to take the lead.

But that’s not what happened. Swiatek pulled Pegula from one side of the court to the other, to which Pegula responded with a lob. The world number one hit the lob away with an overhead smash to the American’s backhand side.

After more long rallies, with each player gaining an advantage, Pegula managed to break the tournament’s top position.
