An Illinois woman decided to buy a lottery ticket while grocery shopping and then forgot about it when she checked the numbers. She was stunned when she realized she had won big.

According to the Illinois Lottery, the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, was shopping at a Jewel-Osco supermarket in Elmhurst on Oct. 20.

“While on my way to see my aunt, I made a quick stop at Jewel to pick up a few groceries, and before heading out the door, I picked up a Lucky Day Lotto ticket,” she told lottery officials. She put the card in her bag and “completely forgot about it.”

The woman revealed that a few days passed before she actually realized she had won: she found the ticket at the bottom of her bag. She told officials who opened her lottery app, scanned her ticket and checked if “it was a winner.”

“I immediately saw ‘$1,000,000’ on the screen and I was completely shocked,” she continued. “I scanned the card again to check it again, and when it said ‘$1,000,000’ again, I immediately started crying. I thought, ‘This is incredible.’ ”

She matched all five numbers of the winning Lucky Day Lotto numbers: 2-3-24-25-28. This is the ninth Illinois Lottery player this year to win $1 million or more on Lucky Day Lotto, officials said.

Now she has big plans for the prize money, including a trip abroad.

“What I’m most excited about is being able to afford annual trips to my favorite place in the entire world: Ireland,” the woman told officials. “The scenery is breathtaking and I am very happy that I now travel to this every year.”
