Ingham Cutters Rugby Club hosted five boys, girls and mixed teams playing against Townsville opponents, with the seniors then taking on their friends from Charters Towers in a Division Three match on Saturday.

The Cutters men, who will play a division lower in 2024, have enjoyed an undefeated season and beat the Bulls with ease thanks to two spectacular tries from Filipe Tabu, one of three Fijians in the strong Ingham team.

Earlier in the day the combined boys team of Ingham Cutters and Western Dragons U17 lost convincingly to a well coached Townsville Grammar.

This was perhaps the best result of the day for the Ingham club as the Cutters U15 girls defeated Teachers West to record their first ever memorable victory over the strong Townsville club.

Kaci Newman, co-organiser of Ladies Day, said 75 well-dressed women from diverse backgrounds enjoyed an afternoon of rugby and refreshments, raising at least $1,000 for charity.

The senior men wore specially designed rugby shirts for women. After the match against Charters Towers they bought all 25 shirts to raise $1000.

The club donated $1,500 to victims of domestic violence after her last ladies day in 2021.

Mrs Newman praised the way the junior girls had gone about selling raffles, giving out prizes, serving food and clearing tables during the event, which sold out within five days of tickets going on sale.

“These young women love training, playing rugby and being involved with such a great club. It was a great way to show our sponsors, many of whom are female entrepreneurs, how great the sport is and how positive it is for the community,” she said.

“The day itself was a great success, the women continued until late into the night.”

Ms Newman said she hopes Ladies Day can become an annual event.
