Inter vs Arsenal: Champions League – live | Internazionale

Important events

90 mins +5: A rare period of play in the Arsenal half. Just the ticket for Inter as they try to turn back the clock.

Part

90 minutes +3: Havertz trudges away sadly, blood still flowing. He doesn’t seem to be in too much distress though, so hopefully that looks a lot worse than it is. Either way, his replacement Ødegaard still has five minutes to create something; the board went up by five after 90 minutes, but play has only just resumed.

Part

90 mins +2: Havertz is busy, great news, but he won’t go any further. He is replaced by Ødegaard, who returns from injury and makes a late, late, late cameo.

Part

90 minutes +1: Havertz has taken a nasty blow and blood is streaming down his face. He gets a bandage. Bisseck also has an ice pack on his head, but it is the Arsenal man who has come off worse.

Part

90 minutes: Havertz and Bisseck collide as they compete for a high ball, just inside Inter’s six-yard box. The whistle blows immediately so the players can receive treatment.

Part

89 minutes: Saka enters from the right. Pavard is clear. This is now a real attack-versus-defense exercise.

Part

88 minutes: Now Gabriel takes a hit from the edge of the D. Bisseck, who together with Dumfries has been huge tonight, blocks.

Part

87 minutes: San Siro suddenly makes noise in the hope of dragging the home team over the line. However, they are silenced almost immediately, with Havertz latching onto a falling ball just inside the penalty area and lashing it to the top right. Just a little too high. A considerable effort that came from very little.

Part

85 minutes: Arsenal continues to investigate patiently. But Inter are masters at sitting back and absorbing pressure, and the clock is no friend to the Gunners.

Part

83 minutes: This is all Arsenal in terms of possession and territory. Summer didn’t happen That however, there is a lot to do apart from the Havertz curler.

82 minutes: Arsenal makes a double swap. Nwaneri and Zinchenko replace Timber and Trossard. “I think Trossard is like a pianist for a rock band,” Russell E begins as he says goodbye to the Belgian for the evening. “Sometimes you need him to play a brilliant solo to tie a piece together, and sometimes you can count on him to play a few solid chords in the background, but most of the time he just stands there and hits a few notes without really making a difference (please note: I’m a pianist).”

Part

80 minutes: There is no way out for Inter. The tension among the home fans is palpable.

Part

79 minutes: Inter makes its final substitution, removing Taremi in favor of Dimarco.

Part

77 minutes: Arsenal continues to push Inter back. On TNT, Tony Hadley Rio Ferdinand points out that they miss the creative influence of Martin Ødegaard here. Time for a quick cameo from the captain?

Part

75 minutes: A huge opportunity for Havertz, who takes down a low left cross on the penalty spot, turns and shoots towards the bottom right. Bisseck comes out of nowhere and bends the ball wide, while Sommer is beaten and his feet are on the ground. Arsenal so close to the equalizer! Again!

Part

73 minutes: Another corner from Arsenal. Martinelli taps the ball in from the left, Havertz rams the ball out for a goal kick. “Two unforced penalties for handball and now Arteta takes action,” notes Justin Kavanagh. “English teams are not doing well in Europe tonight.”

Part

72 minutes: Barella gets the chance to shoot, but lays it off to Dumfries on his right. Dumfries cuts wide. It doesn’t feel like it’s going to end 1-0, but then we thought the same thing in Newcastle last weekend and look what happened there.

Part

71 minutes: Çalhanoğlu makes way for Asllani.

Part

70 minutes: Suddenly there’s an edge to it. Jesus knocks Çalhanoğlu, who remains down. Arsenal plays on. Inter is not happy. But then they respond via Thuram. Thuram has options, but wanders the pass so long that Martinelli arrives to steal him off his toe. Everyone suddenly boiling.

Part

68 minutes: Barella thinks he has won a free kick, so he sniffs the ball. However, Jesus won. Barella gets a yellow card for holding the ball, while Jesus followed him in there for trying to knock the ball out of his hands. Grown men here!

Part

67 minutes: “Did Arsenal play its trump card by letting Jesus play on the right wing? Hey, you’d be laughing or you’d be crying, right? Simon McMahon, ladies and gentlemen. He’s here for the next four years. Try the Big Mac meal.

65 minutes: That rare example, a Saka corner that is not written home about.

Part

64 minutes: The ever-animated Mikel Arteta is shown a yellow card for handling the ball while it was still in play, inches before it rolled over the touchline. It’s not exactly Tyrone Mings levels of farce. It’s not some pre-mediated nonsense in the style of Diego Simeone from all those years ago. An accidental, over-enthusiastic misjudgment. But the referee has no choice but to book the Arsenal manager. To be fair to Arteta, he takes the punishment in good grace and with a wry smile.

62 minutes: Inter responds by making a threefold change. Zieliński, Martínez and Frattesi make way for Thuram, Mkhitaryan and Barella.

Part

60 minutes: Havertz drifts in from the right and curls the ball towards the top left corner. It’s trickling in. Sommer does very well to take a corner, from which Arsenal lure all kinds from madhouse in the Inter-box. A series of blocked shots. Inter ultimately hack clear. Arsenal are getting closer. So much better from the Gunners.

Part

58 minutes: Saka causes even more chaos with one of his inswinging corners from the right. Taremi looks back over his own goal line from a few meters away. Dumfries clears it off the line at the far post, using his trouser pack as a cushion. So close. Possibly quite painful. Saka’s corners are So sweet.

56 minutes: Martinez shows interest in a long kick through the middle. He would have been released too, if not for Gabriel and Saliba’s perfectly thought-out pincer move. Elegant but also no-nonsense. “I have to take some offense at your disrespect for one of the greatest guitar soloists of all time,” complains Joe Pearson. “I mean, Wish You Were Here is nothing without David Gilmour’s guitar work and Dick Parry’s saxophone. Would you prefer Piers Morgan on co-comm? I just never really had Pink Floyd. So to answer your question…probably yes. Shall we meet somewhere in the middle? Dave Davies of the Kinks? The singer of Spandau Ballet? Melvyn Bragg?

Part

54 minutes: Martinez drops back again and throws it like a quarterback, but this long pass along the right never finds Frattesi.

Part

52 minutes: Martinez plays a glorious pass down the right for Dumfries, who should find Taremi in the middle, but Timber cleverly positions himself to deflect the cross back to Sommer. Almost a great counter.

Part

50 minutes: Darmian throws into the Arsenal field from the left. Saka heads away and the whistle blows for a free kick. This match almost immediately reverted to the nothingness it was before the penalty.

Part

48 minutes: …nothing, but it should have been something. Martinelli makes a long loop through the corner. Saliba fails to make a header, a few yards away, with the far stick. Goal kick. Big chance.

Part

47 minutes: That was an early statement of intent from Arsenal, and they are back in front, with the presence of Havertz and Martinelli on the left winning a corner at Dumfries. Of which…

Part

Inter gets the ball rolling for the second half. Jesus comes into the field for Merino. Arsenal are immediately on the attack, with Havertz sliding Martinelli into the Inter box on the left. Martinelli makes the side net wave. Summer had it covered.

Part

Part-time entertainment. Some really good Champions League related reading for your enjoyment.

HALF TIME: Internazionale 1-0 Arsenal

There was absolutely nothing of note to report… until… and that changed the mood in San Siro. It was terribly flat beforehand.

GOAL! Internazionale 1-0 Arsenal (Çalhanoğlu pen 45+3)

Çalhanoğlu has to wait because the VAR checks for offside in the run-up to the penalty kick. But there is no escape for Arsenal. Çalhanoğlu looks at Raya and rolls the penalty to the left of center as the goalkeeper dives the other way. That’s 19 of Çalhanoğlu’s 19 penalties for Inter.

Penalty for Inter!

45 mins +2: Çalhanoğlu turns it in from the left. Under pressure from Taremi, Merino kicks the ball onto his own arm, which sticks well to his side. The referee points to the spot. Saka is furious, but the official doesn’t change his mind.

Part

45 minutes +1: Martinez is bundled in by Saliba. It’s a free kick, but he wants the defender to get a yellow card. The referee is not interested. Even on yellow, the striker wants to pay attention to himself here.

Part

45 minutes: Saka’s corner leads to nothing. Inter clear. Two more minutes are added. More, please!

Part

44 minutes: Saka’s inswinger from the right gets a corner on the left. Martinelli hits long and it now becomes another corner from the right.

Part

43 minutes: Timber sends a strange curling shot and cross from the left. It runs towards the top right corner, but slow enough to be easy to catch. Sommer opts for a punch instead, a strange decision that leads to an unnecessary corner kick.

Part

41 minutes: Frattesi taps in a cross from the right. Taremi wins a header, eight meters out, but with White glued to his side, he can only head harmlessly over the bar. But better from Inter their bar is almost underground.

Part

39 minutes: Martinelli sends a deep cross from the left. With Saka lurking on the far stick, Inter are yet to concede a corner. Saka lofts another cruel inswinger into the six-yard box, but the hosts have dealt with this well so far, and are doing so again here.

Part

37 minutes: (insert extended David Gilmour solo here)

Part

35 minutes: It is a credit to everyone at the San Siro that there is still a lot of noise being made by both sets of fans. The players are not pulling their weight at the moment.
