Iowa State football defense keeps team afloat in first half against Iowa

Iowa State football’s offense never really got going in the first half of the Cy-Hawk game against Iowa on Saturday.

Fortunately for the Cyclones, the defense was strong enough in the first 30 minutes of the game to limit the damage, giving the Hawkeyes a 13-0 lead at halftime.

Iowa outscored the Cyclones 196-101 and had three third-down conversions to none for ISU. Still, that two-score deficit Iowa State faced could reasonably have been a lot worse.

The Hawkeyes’ only touchdown of the first half came on a short field, with the possession starting in ISU territory. It ended with a big run from 27 yards by Kaleb Johnson. But after that, the Cyclones’ defense began to shine.

Quarterback Rocco Becht was intercepted by Jay Higgins, setting up the Hawkeyes’ offense at the ISU 11-yard line. However, Matt Campbell’s group didn’t give up and let Iowa run into the end zone. They fought back and held the Hawkeyes to a field goal, making it 10-0.

Another Iowa drive, arguably the Hawkeyes’ best of the day, came late in the second quarter. After a 77-yard drive, Iowa had first-and-goal at the ISU 3-yard line. But the defense held firm, keeping the Hawkeyes out of the end zone and forcing a second field goal by Drew Stevens to increase the deficit to 13-0. In all, ISU had allowed just six points on two red-zone possessions to the Hawkeyes

That was the teams’ score at halftime, but all things considered the Cyclones were lucky that the game didn’t get out of hand yet.

On the first drive of the second half, the Cyclones’ D came up with another good effort when Eli Porter intercepted a pass from Cade McNamara at the ISU 25, giving Becht and co. good position.
