After falling to Oklahoma last week, Alabama’s playoff chances took a huge hit, dropping the team to No. 13 in the most recent College Football Playoff rankings.

It’s time for teams to build their resumes for the playoffs, and the Crimson Tide’s loss came at a critical time. The committee will make its final decisions for the bracket on December 8.

On Saturday, however, head coach Kalen DeBoer’s team defeated Auburn 28-14 to finish the regular season 9-3 and 5-3 in the SEC.

Could the Crimson Tide still sneak into the first 12-team playoff by beating Auburn on Saturday? Here’s a look at Alabama’s position in the playoff race and how it could still get into the race.

Is Alabama out of the playoffs?

Alabama was ranked No. 13 by the College Football Playoff committee prior to the Auburn game, two spots out of the 12-team bracket, as the Big 12 champion, ranked outside the top 12, will earn a spot. Clemson, at No. 12, was the first team to drop out and Alabama was the second.

However, Clemson lost to South Carolina 17-14. Miami, No. 6, also lost. The Hurricanes fell 42-38 to Syracuse, eliminating them from the ACC championship game and into the at-large pool.

Playoff scenarios for Alabama

Alabama will be matched up against Indiana for the final spot in the major playoffs. Indiana is coming off a loss to Ohio State, but there have been very few good wins. Alabama has wins over Georgia and South Carolina, but has two more losses than the Hoosiers.

Alabama can also hope the committee floods Miami after the Hurricanes suffer their second loss of the season. Miami is 10-2 and Alabama is 9-3, but Miami’s best win is against Louisville and there are few other notable wins on the schedule.

The Crimson Tide will benefit from SMU beating Clemson in the ACC championship game, as Clemson wouldn’t get an at-large spot ahead of Alabama, but SMU would.

The SEC championship game would only impact Alabama if Texas A&M reaches Atlanta. If the Aggies win, they would steal a bid and push Alabama down the pecking order, because Georgia would likely get an at-large bid before Alabama and the Aggies would not.

The Big 12 and Big Ten championship games will have no impact on Alabama’s overall standings.
