Is Doug Pederson Being Fired? Jaguars Coach on Hot Seat After Midseason Collapse, Early-Season Troubles

Doug Pederson has gone from being the head coach who got the Jaguars back on track to potentially being the latest coach fired in Jacksonville. The former Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia forward must get Jacksonville back on track with franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence or risk being out of a job as early as 2025.

Pederson, 56, is 18-19 in three-plus seasons with the Jaguars after Monday night’s 47-10 Week 3 loss at Buffalo. The Jaguars are off to an 0-3 start after finishing 1-5 at the end of last season and are a combined 1-8 in their last eight games.

The Jaguars moved to 9-8 to sweep the flagging AFC South in 2022 during Pederson’s first season in Jacksonville. They matched that record in 2023 but fell sharply at the end to finish a game behind the 10-7 division champion Texans.

Expectations were higher this year than just hitting a game above .500. And now the pressure to win even higher is mounting, with Lawrence receiving his lucrative contract extension this offseason.

Here’s how much Pederson’s position in Jacksonville is in demand right now and whether there are signs that owner Shad Khan may need to look for his sixth full-time head coach since taking over the team in 2012.

Doug Pederson’s coaching record

Pederson is now under .500 through his first 37 games with the Jaguars. He is .500 (1-1) in the playoffs after beating the Chargers following the 2022 season before falling to the eventual Super Bowl champion Chiefs in the divisional round.

With the Eagles in five regular seasons, Pederson went 42-37-1 (.531). He was 4-2 in the playoffs, including a Super Bowl 52-winning run after posting a 13-3 record in 2017.

Given that he gave Philadelphia a head start, his short run was a concern, but his immediate success in Jacksonville gave him confidence that he could produce better results than he had thus far.

Doug Pederson’s contract

When Pederson was hired in 2022, he was given a multi-year contract that runs beyond 2024. If the Jaguars fire him, they would pay out the remainder of the deal, which is reportedly worth $8.5 million per season.

Will the Jaguars Fire Doug Pederson?

The Eagles enjoyed a great honeymoon period with Pederson before his schematic shortcomings and tough personnel decisions, such as Carson Wentz vs. Jalen Hurts at QB, hurt the organization’s chances of returning to a Super Bowl. The Eagles were vindicated somewhat when Pederson’s replacement, Nick Sirianni, led them to another Super Bowl following the 2022 season.

The Jaguars haven’t been the best offensive adjustment team, as Lawrence has struggled and dealt with a number of key injuries. They’ve struggled to put together so many talented pieces on defense. Pederson has already made a major coordinator change, replacing Mike Caldwell with Ryan Nielsen this past offseason.

Inside the offense, Pederson has been questioned for staying with coordinator Press Taylor too long, given Lawrence’s struggles. Taylor is still on staff, but passing game coordinator Nick Holz left the Jaguars for the AFC South rival Titans in 2024.

Pederson was the right coach for the Jaguars in 2022, as he helped clean up the terrible mess left by Urban Meyer and his staff. He benefited from a strong offseason from GM Trent Baalke, which resulted in the elevating of Lawrence.

But now the high expectations have been met with some stagnation. As an offensive-minded coach, rightly or wrongly, Pederson’s fate depends on Lawrence turning the tide and getting the Jaguars back into AFC playoff contention.

The Jaguars lost to the Dolphins and Browns, two playoff teams from last year. The Bills were another tough one. Now they have two huge division games against the Texans (away) and Colts (home).

With Houston picking up where it left off last season and new AFC teams playing well, Jacksonville can’t afford to get into a much bigger hole with Pederson. Khan is more panicky than patient when it comes to his head coaches, so he’s opting to put Pederson on the hot seat to the point where there has to be major improvement by midseason, a year after his Jaguars began this collapse.
