    The two-time defending champion Kansas City Chiefs are poised for another strong 2024 season after upgrading their wide receiver group. In the NFL draft, the franchise selected wide receiver Xavier Worthy, who broke the NFL Combine record in the 40-yard dash, in the first round. The team also signed wideout Hollywood Brown in free agency.

    But their star returning wide receiver, Rashee Rice, is facing legal questions as the season begins after the sophomore player was reportedly involved in a car crash in Dallas that left two people hospitalized.

    Here’s a complete timeline of Rice’s offseason.

    March 30: Dallas Police are reporting a serious injury crash on the North Central Expressway.

    April 10: Dallas PD issues an arrest warrant for Rice’s involvement in the six-car crash. Rice is listed as one of two drivers who “were speeding in the leftmost lane of North Central Expressway, near University Boulevard. The drivers caused a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles.”

    The warrant contained:

    • One case of aggravated assault
    • One case of a collision with serious bodily injury
    • Six charges for collisions with injuries

    Dallas police spokeswoman Kristin Lowman told USA TODAY Sports that a Lamborghini driven by Rice veered off the road after losing control and hitting the median barrier. Two passengers were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

    April 11: Rice turns himself in to Glenn Heights police and is arrested at a regional jail in Desoto, Texas, south of Dallas.

    April 16: Rice and Southern Methodist University cornerback Teddy Knox, who was also reportedly involved in the accident, were named in a $10 million lawsuit.

    Plaintiffs Irina Gromova and Edvard Petrovskiy allege that Rice and Knox intentionally drove at high speed and were negligent toward the victims of the March 30 accident.

    “Despite innocent victims calling for help and desperately trying to escape their wrecked vehicles in shock, (Rice and Knox) ​​intentionally and knowingly evaded aid to injured commuters and fled the scene,” the lawsuit states. “The victims and bystanders of the massacre attempted to attack (Rice and Knox), but they were ignored in (their) attempt to flee without responsibility.”

    Knox was suspended from the Southern Methodist University football team.

    May 7: Dallas PD named Rice in an investigation into the alleged beating of a photographer outside a Dallas club. Rice was not charged.

    May 21: According to Dallas police, charges in the case against the photographer have been dropped.

    August 29: NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy says Rice likely will not be placed on the commissioner’s exempt list.

    What has Rashee Rice said about the allegations?

    Rice apologized in April for his role in the six-car crash on March 30.

    “Today I spoke with Dallas Police Department investigators regarding Saturday’s accident,” Rice wrote in a story on his Instagram page. “I take full responsibility for my part in this case and will continue to cooperate with the appropriate authorities. I sincerely apologize to everyone affected by Saturday’s accident.”

    Rice’s attorney, Royce West, said at a news conference: “He’s a young man who made a mistake.”

    Is Rashee Rice playing tonight?

    Kansas City takes on Baltimore tonight to open the season, with kickoff scheduled for 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC.

    The NFL typically waits for police and other law enforcement to complete their investigations before imposing suspensions. Rice has not, to date, faced any disciplinary action for his alleged role in the crash and is scheduled to play. He could face a suspension or other disciplinary action later this season pending the law enforcement investigation and/or an NFL investigation into the crash.
