Isolated release of benzene reported at Lima Refining

Press release from the Allen County Sheriff’s Office

November 7, 2024

Lima Refining Company is responding to the release of gasoline vapors from a tank vent, which briefly contributed to benzene readings in an isolated area. The Shawnee Township Fire Department and EMA are on scene.

Out of an abundance of caution, community members were asked to avoid Buckeye Road. That road has now been opened.

There may be an odor, local air quality is monitored. There are currently no observable measurements. There is no directive from local authorities or the Lima refinery to change daily operations. Activities can continue as normal. “There is no shelter in place, there is no danger to the public,” said Shawnee Township Fire Chief Austin Miller.

All refinery employees have been checked and no injuries have been reported. Any questions can be directed to Cenovus Media Relations.
