Janelle Monáe debuts ET Halloween costume on Jennifer Hudson’s show

This latest installment of Janelle Monáe’s growing legion of elite Halloween costumes will have you calling home for help.

Monáe debuted another impeccably crafted (but no less disturbing) outfit on Wednesday’s episode The Jennifer Hudson Showwhere she attended while dressed as ET the alien from director Steven Spielberg’s 1982 classic film ET the extraterrestrial.

“I never thought I’d meet E.T.,” Hudson said as Monáe approached the set in full prosthetics, mimicking the character’s raspy voice as she whispered “Jennifer” several times for a nostalgic bit that would either tickle your Reese’s Pieces or have your ‘ouch’ repeated as you try (unsuccessfully) to sleep tonight.

“Do you hear the voice? Yes, ET, it’s me. The finger is lighting you all, look!” Hudson exclaimed as Monáe’s left finger started to glow, just like ET’s in the movie. She repeated Hudson’s name again, causing even more excitement for the host. “ET knows my name! Thanks for coming to the happy place. I don’t know if I should say Janelle or ET?”

Monáe responded by repeating ET’s name before confirming, “ET is… Janelle Monáe!” as the audience applauded.

The 38-year-old also shared an extended photoshoot on her Instagram profile, which also featured her as her own take on Elliott, the 10-year-old boy (originally played by Henry Thomas) who befriends ET in the film.

“You finally made it home. Welcome back ET Thanks Google Maps,” Monáe wrote in the caption. “Starring yours truly as both ET and Janellliott.”

Monáe, a 10-time Grammy-nominated artist and SAG Award-winning actress, previously revealed that she has an anonymous benefactor who funds her elaborate Halloween costumes, whom she considers her “fairy Halloween mom.”

“My job is to make people believe in their imagination. That’s a job, that’s my goal. Imagination inspires countries,” Monáe said. The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s important to the committee of Imagineers that I go out and do that good work. There’s a fund set aside to get people to believe in art, and again, performance art.”
