Jeff Ulbrich ‘not worried’ about Greg Zuerlein after missed punts cost Jets vs. Bills

The wind whipped around MetLife Stadium on Monday night and it ultimately cost the Jets their 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills as a veteran kicker. Greg Zuerlein missed a pair of field goals in the second half.

With the score tied in the third quarter, Zuerlein – who had already scored two extra points and a 22-yard field goal – lined up for a 32-yard attempt from the left hash mark, but upended the one from the left.

After a Buffalo punt, he had a chance at redemption to give the Jets the lead again, but this time, when he punted on the other side of the stadium in the fourth quarter, his 43-yard attempt from just inside the right drifted hashmark to the left. and knocked the left one back upright.

“That bothers you as a player, because you see all the hard work they put in and I don’t keep the end of the bargain,” Zuerlein said after the match about his missed kicks. “That’s up to me.”

He added: “Just not kicking well.”

Despite Zuerlein’s off night amid a poor start to the season — having previously missed a potential game-winner from 50 yards out late in the fourth quarter against Denver in Week 4 and a 45-yard attempt during a Week 3 win — is interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich gave the veteran a vote of confidence.

“You have to look at it carefully, but I’m not worried about Greg,” Ulbrich said. “I know this guy’s track record and I know he’s going to find his rhythm here and we’re going to get rolling.”

With the misses, the 13-year NFL veteran became the fifth kicker since 2010 to miss two field goals within 45 yards while his team trailed by three points or less in the second half.

“I’m trying different things to solve that,” he said. “Every day I go to training and often it’s great, but I have to eliminate those bad kicks because they cost us.”

“It’s just one of those things,” Zuerlein continued, “you just have to hit a better ball.”

Over the last two years, Zuerlein missed just three of 25 punts from 40 to 49 yards. He has matched this mark in six games this year, needing just four attempts to do so.

“I’ve been through ups and downs, hell and back many times,” the 36-year-old kicker said of his career. “And right now it’s not good, it’s not good enough, because these guys in the locker room deserve to win. And they deserve to win another game this season.”
