Jerry Jones shares likelihood of Trey Lance taking over Cowboys QB role – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

It doesn’t appear that Trey Lance will start at quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys this season.

The 49ers’ No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, now Cooper Rush’s backup following star quarterback Dak Prescott’s season-ending hamstring injury, could be in line to start for the remainder of the NFL season from 2024 if Dallas makes a change after that. two bad starts from Rush.

However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn’t see that happening. At least for now.

“I don’t know,” Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday about the possibility of Lance starting. “I want to give our team – at all stages – the very best chance to be successful. So we’re going to go out here with the quarterback that gives us the best chance to win the game.”

In three games (two starts) as QB1, Rush completed 58 of 103 pass attempts (56 percent) for 514 yards and two touchdowns, losing one interception and two fumbles.

Despite Rush’s apparent struggles thus far, Jones believes the seven-year NFL veteran gives Dallas the best chance to win for the rest of the season.

“Yes, I think our best chance is to have Rush here, and the goal is to win the game,” Jones added.

Lance, who was drafted third overall by San Francisco three years ago before trading him to Dallas for a fourth-round pick before the 2023 season, played in just nine games (four starts) during his career and was once considered a raw player. quarterback prospect with exciting physical attributes that just needed live NFL reps.

While it doesn’t appear that much-needed reps are in the offing for Lance at this point, Jones is still high on the 24-year-old quarterback.

“I’ve seen a lot of improvement (in Lance),” Jones said. “I think he does some things really well. I think his footwork is noticeably better, and I see the value of the reps he’s had. So I have seen improvement there.”

If Rush had to compete for another game or two, the Cowboys might have no choice but to reconsider.
