Jets’ Garrett Wilson makes a breathtaking one-handed TD catch against Texans

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Garrett Wilson saw the ball floating his way, so he did everything he could to catch it.

He jumped into the end zone with his legs forward and his arms outstretched. And with a dazzling one-handed grab, the star wide receiver gave the New York Jets the lead and left everyone watching – in the stadium and on TV at home – absolutely stunned.

“Oh, my goodness,” interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said.

Wilsons acrobatic 26-yard touchdown catch helped the Jets do that a 21-13 victory over the Houston Texans on Thursday evening. And it will certainly appear on highlights for years to come.

“I thought, ‘That’s a good one right there. That’s a good one and it should count,” Wilson said. “I remember saying to them all, ‘You’re all gassing me too early. It’s gotta count, y’all. Let’s chill!’

“Once it counted, I was like, ‘Yeah, okay. Now you can tell me everything. ”

With the Jets facing third-and-19 from the Texans 26, Aaron Rodgers threw the ball toward Wilson in the end zone. And the Jets star receiver did the rest.

Looking like Michael Jordan’s “Jumpman” logo, Wilson snapped the pass in the air with both legs spread and was able to land in the end zone.

“I told him he might get kicked off Adidas after this,” said a laughing Davante Adams, who is sponsored by Nike. “He looked like he was going to Jumpman with me. So we’ll see. I’m going to talk to some people about it. I’m not going to say they’re going to replace the logo – Mike might not like me saying that – but that was a tough call.”

Wilson’s catch was immediately reminiscent of Odell Beckham Jr.’s one-handed grab. of the Giants against Dallas in 2014.

“Man, Odell was different and he would come down three feet and the ball would land out of bounds,” said Wilson, who added that he was watching the game live when Beckham made the catch. “And it was Odell, man. Odell vs. the Cowboys. That’s it.

“For it to even come up in that conversation, I’m blessed. I am honored. But Odell, yeah, that’s that guy.

The play was initially called an incomplete pass, but Ulbrich challenged.

“I mean, I was talking to the referee when they reviewed it,” Ulbrich said. “I was like, ‘Just for posterity’s sake, you should say this is so, so it goes down in history.'”

A video replay review confirmed Wilson’s shin was in the end zone and a touchdown was called to give the Jets a 14–10 lead with 12:54 left in the fourth quarter.

“I felt like I put it in a pretty good spot, but yeah, I didn’t do much when it counted,” Rodgers said. “I just lobbed one up and he made an unbelievable catch. When I saw the replay it looked like he had his knee in and I was like, shoot, let’s do the challenge, and Brick was already in front of me throwing it.

It was the second of two one-handed touchdown grabs Wilson made against the Texans. The first was a less spectacular, but still impressive, 21-yard TD in the third quarter.

“That’s G, man,” Adams said. “I’ve even seen on walkthroughs where we throw the ball back and someone catches the ball and they run into the end zone. So we start playing catch as we go back and he’ll do stuff like that, so it’s not that surprising.

“But to be able to do that for 80,000 and perhaps millions or hundreds of thousands of people at home, that is special.”

Wilson was told that Beckham’s catch came in, which ended up being a Giants loss – so Wilson’s might have been better.

“You know what? Okay,” Wilson said, laughing. “Reasonable.”
