The Buffalo Bills exorcised some regular-season demons on Sunday by spoiling the Kansas City Chiefs’ undefeated season. Leading 23-21 with 2:27 to play, Bills coach Sean McDermott wisely opted to go for it on a fourth-and-2, because there is no world where anyone would willingly hand the ball to Patrick Mahomes give if he has the chance to win. Josh Allen made that look like a genius decision by running around like his hair was on fire, blasting his way through the Chiefs defense on his way to the end zone for a final score of 30-21.

In the heat of the action, CBS lead announcer Jim Nantz called Allen’s wild struggle “the play of the year in the NFL.” After the successful extra point, he explained why he went there.

“By the way, considering all the stakes here, that’s why I’m calling it the play of the year,” he said. “We happened to see that other little one in Washington a few weeks ago, but with all this – the undefeated champions getting their first knockout punch this year, this is about as big as it gets.”

This…doesn’t seem like a controversial position at all. Yes, the Washington Commanders are having a surprisingly productive year, but their win over the Chicago Bears won’t be as meaningful in the grand scheme of the NFL as the Bills taking down Kansas City. Especially if Buffalo can surpass them as the AFC’s No. 1 seed.

In fact, it’s a bit of a shame that Nantz even felt the need to contextualize what was a really solid call because he was anticipating responses from people online who hadn’t left their couch in ten hours. Anyone with a functioning brain understood what he was doing at the time and holding everyone’s hand during the very basic thought process added a bit of sizzle to the moment.
