Jimmy John’s is releasing a unique fast food sandwich – and I was the first to try it

Everyone knows that Jimmy John’s is ‘freaky fresh’ and ‘freaky fast’, but did you know that the sandwich chain crazy also trendy? In 2023, Jimmy John’s created a starter jacket that screamed ’90s fashion and made us want to buy it right away. It then jumped on the fiery menu trend earlier this year with its Firecracker series, complete with a new wrap and chips.

Now it’s capitalizing on the world’s love for dill pickles with an all-new, first-of-its-kind fast food sandwich you’re going to want to try.

Jimmy John’s new Picklewich sandwiches

Jimmy John’s is releasing a new Picklewich that’s unlike any other sandwich on the menu. Why? Because instead of bread, the “sandwich” uses two halves of a giant Kosher dill pickle.

The new Picklewich will appear on the menu in two variants: the Vito and the Turkey & Provolone. The Vito consists of a hollowed out dill pickle filled with salami, capocollo, provolone, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, sauce and herbs. And the Turkey & Provolone is a stripped dill pickle filled with turkey, provolone, lettuce, tomato and onion.

Jimmy John’s Picklewich was likely inspired by the pickle sandwich from Long Island’s Seven Brothers Gourmet Food Market, which went viral on TikTok this summer. That sandwich also included a hollowed out pickle filled with deli meats, cheese, bacon and some extra toppings.

Now, pickle lovers no longer have to travel to New York to try the salty dill sandwich, as Jimmy John’s is bringing the Picklewich to its menus nationwide. Starting October 28, you can order the Picklewiches in restaurants (and for scarily fast delivery), but you’ll have to try it soon because the sandwiches are only on the menu until November 14.

In addition to the pickle sandwiches, Jimmy John’s is bringing back its fan-favorite Pickle Jimmy Chips for a limited time. Whether you pair them with a Picklewich or your favorite order, the spicy dill-flavored chips are a must-have when they’re back on the menu.

I recently got to try the new Turkey & Provolone Picklewich and Pickle Jimmy Chips early, and here is my honest review.

My honest review

As a pickle lover, I really understand the hype surrounding anything salty, salty, and dill-flavored. I’m always going to ask, “Are you going to eat your pickle?” if I’m out with someone and agree to an order of fried pickles, no matter what.

That’s why I was excited to try the new Picklewich, because I think a pickle can make or break a sandwich. My only fear when trying the Picklewich was that it would be very messy and perhaps a little too wet from all the brine.

I tried the Turkey & Provolone Picklewich, which is somewhat similar to my favorite Jimmy John’s order, the Club Lulu, only without the bacon or mayonnaise. The first thing I noticed was that the Picklewich is quite small compared to a normal sub, but it makes sense when you think about the size of a pickle.

The pickle sandwich is delivered tightly wrapped in paper, which you must keep on while eating to prevent the innards from falling out and your hands from getting wet with the brine. The flavors were delicious, which was no surprise to me. For pickle lovers, a turkey and cheese sandwich with extra pickles is of course delicious.

My only problem was what I expected: the sandwich was incredibly messy. Between the salty juices dripping out and the meat trying to push out of the back of the sandwich when I took a bite, eating the Picklewich was a little tricky. Plus, I love Jimmy John’s fresh bread, so I kind of missed it. Overall though, the Picklewich was tasty and a much more flavorful option for those who can’t eat bread and are tired of lettuce wraps.

Will it replace my favorite Jimmy John’s order? No, but I think from now on I’ll be adding a Jimmy Pickle directly to my sandwiches instead of eating it on the side. That said, I do want to try the Vito Picklewich because the meat-filled sandwich sounds like it has a little more to offer than the Turkey & Provolone.

As for the Pickle Jimmy Chips, they may be the best dill pickle chips I’ve ever had. They are spicy and have a fresh dill flavor that is hard to find in many commercial chips. So, Jimmy John’s, if you’d like to keep this on the menu forever, I’d really appreciate it.
