Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow resume their young rivalry on Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs take on the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium.

They are two young stars of the league. Mahomes is higher in the NFL quarterback hierarchy because of his three Super Bowls, but Burrow has had his moments.

Burrow, one of the all-time college football stars to enter the NFL, peaked as a pro in Kansas City a few years ago when he led the Bengals to the Super Bowl in the 2021 season after upsetting Mahomes and the Chiefs in the AFC championship with a surprise 27-24 overtime victory.

Burrow also won the regular season rematch the following season by the same score in Cincinnati.

But Burrow knows it can be tough to beat Mahomes.

The Chiefs got revenge for the 2021 loss with a 23-20 victory in the final seconds of the 2022 AFC championship game. Burrow was out with a wrist injury during the last meeting between the two teams in December 2023, when the Chiefs won 25-17.

Now Mahomes Burrow stands in his team’s way to 1-1.

He knows where he stands.

“Pat is one of the few,” Burrow said. “He’s really exceptional at extending the play, getting moving, trying to buy that extra tick for guys who are open and really understand the game. So it’s always a great challenge to go up against him,” Burrow said.

Mahomes has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories and has already shown he can beat a team looking to make a statement. While they last held their championship banner aloft in Week 1, the Chiefs took matters into their own hands against the Baltimore Ravens, who were looking to avenge their own loss to Kansas City in January’s AFC championship game.

Mahomes also has the benefit of more rest before the game, but with a catch.

Following their victory in the season’s opening Thursday game, Mahomes and wife Brittany had a long weekend and a rare Sunday off during the season. They headed to the US Open in New York with Chiefs teammate Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift to watch Italy’s Jannik Sinner beat American Taylor Fritz in a plush section of Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Mahomes also had to answer questions this week about former President Trump’s comments about his wife during an interview on “Fox & Friends” after Swift publicly endorsed VP Harris. The Mahomes family’s political leanings have widened in recent weeks following Brittany’s past outpourings of support for Trump. Brittany also revealed that the family is dealing with an invasion of black vultures that took over their Missouri backyard this week.

Meanwhile, Burrow will play his first game against the Chiefs since dyeing his hair bleached.

In four meetings against the Chiefs, Burrow is 3-1 with a 69.8 completion percentage. In two regular-season meetings, he has thrown for 732 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.

Mahomes has faced the Bengals six times in his career, including the postseason. He has a 3-3 overall record against Cincinnati. He has a 68.9 completion percentage in those games. Mahomes has averaged 280.7 yards against the Bengals with 13 touchdowns and three interceptions.

Mahomes has faced Burrow four times. In those four games, Mahomes is 97-for-134 (72.3%) with 270.7 yards per game, eight touchdowns and two interceptions.
