Joe Mixon questionable to return after hip drop tackle

The NFL has banned the hip drop tackle…but it hasn’t happened yet.

Officials don’t give the penalty on the field, but instead let the league office handle it with fines during the week. The NFL fined two players for hip drop tackles that weren’t penalized in Week 1.

Bears linebacker TJ Edwards can expect his nice letter this week.

Edwards made a classic hip drop tackle, injuring Texans running back Joe Mixon on Sunday Night Football. It remains to be seen whether Mixon will return with an ankle injury.

Mixon twisted his ankle when Edwards illegally pulled him down with 11:52 left in the third quarter.

Mixon headed to the X-ray room after an examination in the medical tent on the sideline.

Mixon, who carried the ball 30 times for 159 yards and a touchdown in the season opener, carried the ball seven times for 20 yards and caught the ball three times for 25 yards tonight.

Reserve Dameon Pierce is inactive, allowing Cam Akers to make his debut for the Texans in Mixon’s absence.

UPDATE 11:00 PM ET: Mixon returned to the game with 50 seconds left in the third quarter.
