Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll of the New York Giants are expected to return in 2025

It’s been a nightmare year for the New York Giants, starting in January when a feud between head coach Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale led to an ugly divorce.

Things didn’t get better during free agency when running back Saquon Barkley split to join the Philadelphia Eagles, only to have that split exposed for the world to see in “Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants.”

Then came the play…

The Giants are 2-8 entering Week 12 having released quarterback Daniel Jones just 20 months after signing him to a four-year, $160 million contract.

It was one bummer after another and the franchise has become the hot kid of the NFL. They are routinely mocked on network television, criticizing the entire league – by current and former executives, current and former players and media personalities.

Despite all this, co-owner John Mara gave the current regime a vote of confidence in October and apparently plans to stick to it.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reports that Mara plans to keep Schoen as GM after this year.

Multiple sources reiterated to CBS Sports this week that Giants owner John Mara plans to keep Schoen after this year. Mara has said this publicly, and Schoen echoed his boss last week. Still, questions lingered around the league in recent weeks about whether Mara would make a move against the general manager who signed Jones to the four-year, $160 million contract two seasons ago.

Sources say the answer is no, explaining that because Mara is present during the day-to-day operations, he understands why and how the contract was given in the first place.

In addition to Schoen, Jones reports that the team also appears inclined to retain Daboll as head coach through 2025 and possibly beyond.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll is also expected to return before 2025, as Mara does not want more turmoil. Daboll spent more time with the quarterbacks this season and coached Jones hard at his request after becoming the full-time playcaller. He is expected to get the opportunity to coach a new quarterback with the Giants next season.

“I don’t think there is a strong push for change,” said one source.

After a decade of constant resets, rebuilds and front office turnover, Mara and co-owner Steve Tisch appear poised to keep it going. At least another season.
