Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has become the first Democrat to support President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to nominate Senator Marco Rubio of Florida as Secretary of State.

Trump is expected to choose Rubio for the top position.

While Trump could still change his mind, Rubio would have an easy shot at approval, now with Fetterman’s blessing. Rubio would need the approval of 51 senators. Republicans won the Senate majority during this year’s election cycle, giving them a 52-seat lead beyond Fetterman’s expected vote.

“It is not surprising that the other team’s choice will have political differences than mine,” Fetterman said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Tuesday morning. “That said, my colleague @SenMarcoRubio is a strong choice and I look forward to voting for his confirmation.”

This is a developing news story and will be updated with more information.
