John Fetterman offers his office bathroom to Sarah McBride as Republican lawmakers continue to attack her

Sen. John Fetterman (D., Pa.) has offered his office bathroom to Sen. Sarah McBride of Delaware, elected this month as the first openly transgender member of Congress, as Republicans in the House of Representatives prepare to oust her from using the women’s restrooms in Congress. Capitol.

McBride said Wednesday that she will follow the rules even if she disagrees with them.

“I’m not here to argue about bathrooms,” McBride said. “I’m here to fight for Delawareans and lower costs for families.”

Fetterman’s offer comes as the new Delaware lawmaker faces attacks from Republican lawmakers, including a bill from U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace (R., S.C.) that would restrict lawmakers from using single-sex facilities “other than those which correspond to their biological sex.” which was clearly directed at McBride.

“There isn’t a job I’m afraid of losing if it means demoting someone,” Fetterman said in a post on X Wednesday. “If that is a defining issue for a voter, there will be another candidate. We have a bathroom in my office that everyone can use, including Representative-elect Sarah McBride.”

Fetterman has routinely touted himself as a staunch defender of transgender rights. His post came the same day that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R., La.) announced on Transgender Day of Remembrance that transgender people will not be allowed to use Capitol bathrooms that align with their gender identity.

In a statement on X Wednesday, McBride said she hopes her future colleagues in the House of Representatives can understand the reasons why she was chosen for this new position.

“I loved seeing those qualities in the future colleagues I met and I look forward to seeing those qualities in each member in January,” said McBride. “I hope that all my colleagues will try to do the same with me.”

The Republican Party’s approach to McBride follows newly-elected President Donald Trump’s campaign, which focused heavily on transgender people. Advertisements that routinely air in Pennsylvania targeting Vice President Kamala Harris’ stance on transgender rights have been credited — including by Fetterman — with possibly contributing to Trump’s victory.
