Joker 2 fails to perform in its second week

During its opening weekend, the film grossed $38 million at the US box office, which was well below the $50–$70 million forecast. But the second week proved brutal for the sequel, as it only grossed $7 million from 4,102 theaters in the US. This translates into an 81% drop, the steepest decline in the history of a film based on a comic book. It is also considered among the steepest domestic drops for a film.

This drop rate secured the film a position in the Top 20 biggest second-weekend drops ever, as reported by Boc Office Mojo, which is known for compiling data on box office measures since 1982. Previously, the steepest record drop recorded by The Marvels. which was released in 23 and witnessed a 78% drop in its second week, as reported by The Guardian.

Joker 2 global box office update

The film starring Joaquin Phoenix grossed $165 million at the worldwide box office, which is far from recouping its $200 million budget. By comparison, Joker was made on a third of the sequel’s budget and grossed $248.4 million worldwide in its opening weekend. The first film’s total gross at the global box office was $1 billion and it set the record as the first R-rated film to do so. The 2019 film was also the highest-grossing R-rated film until this year, but was later replaced by Deadpool and Wolverine.

Joker 2, which is largely a musical, failed to impress the critics as they labeled it “boring” and “beginning boring.” The film stars Phoenix as Joker/Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
