J’ouvert celebrations kick off in Brooklyn with dance and music; NYPD security measures in place

BROOKLYN (WABC) — The J’ouvert celebrations began early Monday morning in Brooklyn

The NYPD has set up several security checkpoints to ensure the safety of everyone participating in the parade or watching as a spectator.

Three hundred wands were used to ensure every person was checked.

J’ouvert celebrations are a traditional carnival celebration that takes place mid-morning.

The festivities include music from DJs, calypso or even soca bands. While the music is going on, participants often cover their bodies with paint.

NYPD Aviation even gave Eyewitness News a look at the parade route, as their helicopters hovered above the tens of thousands of people lining the parade route.

One couple got married on the parade route, while others danced, played steel drums and waved the flags of their Caribbean countries.

The seven-hour event begins at 11:00 a.m. in Crown Heights, Brooklyn on Labor Day.

The parade features steelpan and calypso bands in elaborate costumes marching down Eastern Parkway from Utica Avenue to a grandstand at Grand Army Plaza.

Eyewitness News reporter Phil Taitt feels honored to be one of the parade leaders.

ABC7 New York will provide streaming coverage of the parade beginning at 11 a.m. ET on abc7ny.com, our mobile and connected TV apps, and our YouTube channel.
