Julia Roberts’ Brother Eric Criticizes Her Performance in ‘Steel Magnolias’

Eric Roberts still has a bone to pick this flowers.

The 68-year-old, who is the older brother of Julia Roberts, said he is not a fan of one of her most critically acclaimed films, “Steel Magnolias.”

In his memoir “Runaway Train: Or the Story of My Life So Far,” Roberts was candid about the 1989 dramedy.

“Julia was good in ‘Mystic Pizza,’ great in ‘Pretty Woman,’ but not so much in ‘Steel Magnolias,’ in my opinion, even though it earned Julia her first Academy Award nomination,” he wrote, according to Entertainment Weekly on September 20. “I don’t want to sound like an actor talking nonsense, or a jealous sibling, but I don’t think her performance in that film held up.”

He added: “When I saw her in ‘Steel Magnolias,’ I thought, ‘Okay. Good. She’s almost a good actress, and one day she will be one.'”

But the “Dancing With the Stars” contestant didn’t just have a problem with his sister’s performance, he also had feedback for the other cast members.

“I think all of those brilliant women — Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah — acted their asses off in ‘Steel Magnolias,'” Roberts wrote. “Nobody is great in that movie. They all ate a lot of scenery, and we know that if an actor cries in a movie, he or she is at the top of the class.”

“They get the Oscar nomination because crying gets a lot of credit. It’s the big joke in all the acting classes, even the great Lee Strasberg’s Actors Studio. Crying and dying earns you bacon!”

Roberts also claimed that the 56-year-old “Pretty Woman” star received positive reviews for her portrayal of the Louisiana character because of her real-life Southern roots.

“I also think another reason she got an Oscar nomination for ‘Steel Magnolias’ was her authenticity as a sweet, little Southern girl,” he said. “That’s what she was, or at least that’s how she started out. I don’t know if she had a dialect coach who tried to eradicate her Southern accent, but if so, it didn’t help.”

He also credits his younger brother’s stardom to their family’s Southern heritage.

“I think a big part of her appeal — along with her killer good looks and killer smile — was her Southern accent and mannerisms,” he noted in the memoir. “Such beauty can be off-putting, especially to other women, but Julia’s down-home manner made her seem like your best friend. There’s a certain colorful and enchanting quality to Southern language.”

Later in the chapter, he reflected on how the 1990 romantic comedy “Pretty Woman” catapulted the Oscar winner to greater fame.

“Everybody loved that movie and Julia’s performance in it,” the Golden Globe winner said. “I worked with George C. Scott (who had won an Oscar for ‘Patton’ in 1971) and he told me in his gravelly voice that he thought her movie was going to go through the roof. It did. I saw it happening: Oh my God, Julia is going to be a superstar!”

But actress Emma Roberts’ father was “not really” jealous of Julia’s success: “First of all, we would never be considered for the same roles.”

He did confess, however, that he wasn’t ready for the attention he received after becoming the brother of America’s sweetheart. “When this rare and rarefied thing happened, this worldwide phenomenon of Julia’s stardom, it thrust me into the public eye in a different way,” he wrote.

At times the constant attention felt inappropriate.

“First of all, there were all sorts of suspicions about us — even bizarre and creepy rumors of incest. I don’t know exactly where that came from,” he recalled. “It might have been a stupid idea of what Southerners could do — a mean gesture toward the South. But beyond that, it seemed like there was no room for Julia and me in the public imagination — that we were in competition with each other.”

In addition to his criticism, he also apologized to Julia for saying that he was responsible for her successful career.

He was already an established actor when his little sister moved to New York in 1985 to pursue her own career. Roberts was also struggling with cocaine addiction at the time.

“If it weren’t for me, Julia Roberts and Emma Roberts wouldn’t exist as celebrities, as actresses,” he told Vanity Fair in 2018, adding, “and I’m very proud of that.”

Nowadays he has changed his mind.

“I hope Julia will accept this public apology,” he wrote in his book (out now), per People. “It was an idiotic thing to say.”

The former “Dark Night” contestant went on to say that he believes his drug addiction damaged his relationship with Julia and his other sister Lisa when they were younger.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they were suffering from PTSD when it was dangerous to be around me,” Roberts admitted. “Lisa and Julia needed love and protection — instead they got fear and insecurity.”
