Has Justin Fields done enough to keep the starting job for the Pittsburgh Steelers now that Russell Wilson is cleared for good?

The 25-year-old played exceptionally well on Sunday, completing 25-of-32 passes for 245 yards, a touchdown, an interception and two sacks (also scoring on the ground) in his team’s 20-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

And so, despite averaging just 17 points per game this season, the Steelers are now 3-0 behind Fields, who hasn’t put up spectacular statistics but has directed the offense well.

Sunday was perhaps his best game so far this season, and it was the kind of performance that has pundits and fans alike calling him the QB1 of the future:

Don’t listen to all the dog poop that so many others say
Always believed in the child. Always.
Too talented and too hardworking not to be good.
Good for him.

It was a tougher afternoon for the Chargers and their star quarterback, Justin Herbert, who left the game in the second half after worsening an ankle injuryHe was replaced by Taylor Heinicke, who completed both pass attempts for 24 yards but gave up three sacks.

With the loss, the Chargers are now 2-1 on the season.

But the story was Fields, who makes a compelling case that he deserves to keep the starting job going forward. Head coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t offered much insight into which direction he’s leaning, saying the team would evaluate its options once Wilson is cleared to play, but it could be tough to remove a player who has led his team to an undefeated record thus far.

Yes, Pittsburgh’s defense has played a huge role in that effort, and the schedule has produced three teams that all missed the postseason last year. There are other factors to consider when evaluating Pittsburgh’s success thus far.

But Fields has undoubtedly been a positive development, and the Steelers may owe it to him at this point to give him the starting job.
