Kamala Harris and Donald Trump shake hands during 9/11 memorial service

WASHINGTON-

. change to WASHINGTON — Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump followed a night of tense debates Wednesday with a day of solemn tributes, briefly shaking hands before a 9/11 memorial service at Ground Zero in New York City.

Harris and Trump, who had an awkward handshake just before Tuesday’s contentious debate, had planned to attend other 9/11 memorial services throughout the day, starting with the ceremony at the site of the Twin Towers that were the first targets of the Sept. 9, 2021, terrorist attacks.

As loved ones read the names of the 9/11 victims, Harris and Biden stood in the front row, just feet away from Trump and his running mate JD Vance.

Later in the morning, the candidates will attend a service in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the area where a hijacked plane crashed during a fight between passengers and the 9/11 hijackers.

Harris and President Joe Biden also plan to attend a memorial service at the Pentagon, another 9/11 target.

“Today is a day of solemn remembrance as we mourn the souls lost in a horrific terrorist attack on September 11, 2001,” Harris said in a statement before the ceremonies. “We stand in solidarity with their families and loved ones.”

The 23rd anniversary of 9/11 came the morning after a debate in which Harris criticized Trump for his fickleness and conservative economic and military plans, while Trump angrily condemned the Biden-Harris administration.

Trump’s tirades also brought the debate into focus, including debunked conspiracy theories about migrants in an Ohio town killing and eating dogs and cats.

According to a CNN flash poll, most registered voters who watched the debate said Harris did better than Trump; the gap was 63%-37%.

Although the candidates took a break from political activities due to 9/11, they continued their campaigns.

The Harris team sent out fundraising appeals to celebrate her performance, but reminded supporters that “debates don’t win elections.”

“It’s going to be a very exciting race,” Harris said in an email asking for money.
