Kamala Harris and Donald Trump’s Debate Styles Compared

Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump will likely use very different tactics and styles during their first presidential debate.

Harris and Trump will meet in person for the first time during an ABC News-led debate in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. It is exactly eight weeks before Election Day and a little more than seven weeks after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race and endorsed Harris following his disastrous debate with Trump on June 27.

Harris’ campaign hopes the vice president will use her “classic” debate style and background as a prosecutor in a way that effectively counters Trump’s unconventional, fast-paced and often ill-considered style.

A Harris campaign aide recently told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity, that the vice president views the debate as a “jury trial” and hopes to win the contest on the “merit” while providing voters with “key insights.”

Trump has a clear advantage over Harris when it comes to experience on the national debate stage, having participated in six presidential debates with Biden and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

A single debate with former Vice President Mike Pence in 2020 was Harris’ only major national election debate, though she participated in several others while running for statewide office and the U.S. Senate in California.

In Monday’s edition of The NPR Politics PodcastAccording to White House correspondent Franco OrdoƱez, Trump’s staff has compared “his style or his debating skills” to boxing legend Muhammad Ali, saying Harris “couldn’t prepare for him.”

During the same podcast, NPR senior political editor Domenico Montanaro said he expected Trump to stray from the topic and “lie” during the debate. He also warned that the former president could harm his standing with female voters if he “bullied” Harris.

“It’s no secret,” Montanaro said. “Will he (Trump) be disciplined? No, he won’t be. We know what he does, he lies on a lot of these things and he goes astray. He’s going to do what he does.

“We haven’t seen much change in the way people see Donald Trump. If he plays into the image he has of himself as a bully and someone who doesn’t respect women, then good luck with the gender gap.”

One of the most memorable moments from the Harris-Pence debate, when Harris curtly told Pence, “I’m speaking,” as he tried to interrupt her, is unlikely to be repeated Tuesday because of rules that include muting microphones when it’s not a candidate’s turn to speak.

Judging by past performance, Harris will likely speak more slowly than Trump.

In an analysis published by The economist Last week, University of Pennsylvania linguist Mark Liberman found that Harris chooses her words carefully during public speaking engagements. During their 2020 debate, she uttered 17 percent fewer words than Pence, despite both candidates speaking for the same amount of time.

Meanwhile, Trump is rarely speechless when he speaks in public. Liberman found that Trump spoke 189 words per minute at a recent rally, even though the former president typically uses a smaller vocabulary and often repeats himself, the analysis found.

The candidates have reportedly taken a different approach to preparing for the debate. Harris has spent the past few days at a “debate camp” in Pittsburgh, using a mock television studio with the help of a Trump stand-in, according to The Washington Post.

Trump has opted to skip the traditional preparations and instead hold a limited number of “policy meetings” with staff at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, and reportedly informally practiced responses to anticipated attacks from Harris.

Tuesday’s debate could be the only meeting between the 2024 presidential candidates, as no agreement has been reached on further debates. However, Trump previously said he had agreed to an NBC-hosted debate on Sept. 25.
