Kane scores four goals to break record in defeat to Bayern

Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane scored four goals to become England’s top scorer in Champions League or European Cup history in a defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

Kane’s fourth, his third penalty of the match, was his 33rd Champions League goal, breaking Wayne Rooney’s previous record of 30 goals.

The four goals were also his 50th, 51st, 52nd and 53rd Bayern goals in just 50 games for the club.

Another London-born player, French winger Michael Olise, scored twice on his Champions League debut.

Bayern Munich become the first team to score nine goals in a Champions League match.

Kane put Bayern ahead with a penalty after Aleksandar Pavlovic committed a foul and sent goalkeeper Ivan Nevistic the wrong way.

Raphael Guerreiro scored a superb half-volley before Crystal Palace’s summer signing Olise headed home a cross from Joshua Kimmich.

Bayern brought on Sven Ulrich for the injured Manuel Neuer at half-time. He conceded two goals in five minutes before he touched the ball. Bruno Petkovic and Takuya Ogiwara were too quick for him to make it 3-2.

But Bayern took control again: Kane scored the rebound after Kimmich’s shot was saved and Olise fired the ball into an empty net.

Englishman Kane then scored his second penalty after a dubious handball decision by the video referee.

And he scored a hat-trick of penalties and his fourth goal in total, after Alphonso Davies was fouled.

Leroy Sane came off the bench and fired the ball in from 20 yards, after which Leon Goretzka headed in the ninth inning.

Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and Kane also saw goals disallowed for offside.

This is the second-highest-scoring Champions League match ever, equalling Monaco’s 8-3 win over Deportivo La Coruna in 2003. The record remains Borussia Dortmund’s 8-4 win over Legia Warsaw in 2016.

Thomas Müller made his 152nd Champions League appearance for Bayern, surpassing Barcelona legend Xavi as the player with the most caps for a single club in the tournament.

Kane has scored nine goals in five games for Vincent Kompany’s Bayern this season and also scored a hat-trick in Saturday’s 6-1 win over Holstein Kiel.
