McQueen died on Wednesday, September 11, at his home in Palm Desert, California, according to his attorney Arthur Barens, who spoke to the newspaper.

Barens said McQueen’s cause of death was organ failure. McQueen reportedly suffered an injury a few years ago, which eventually led to progressive organ failure, TMZ reported.

The news was confirmed by McQueen’s wife Jeanie, daughter Madison and son Chase in a statement on Instagram.

“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father Chad McQueen,” the family wrote alongside two black-and-white photos shared to Chad and Steve McQueen’s Instagram accounts.
